Splicer Films

Video Editor Intern

May - December 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I had a great experience as a video editor intern. I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from social media content to highlight reels to trailers. I even was able to contribute to the documentaries themselves as a screenwriter and assistant editor. Interns are given plenty of creative freedom and have a say in what content they would like to work on. After the first few months, I became the editing team lead through which I led meetings, trained interns, and gained leadership skills. And though the internship is remote, I was able to attend several in-person events where I documented film festivals and spoke to audience members and the protagonists of the documentaries. The internship also allows interns to collaborate across teams, so as an editor I was able to work with marketing team members and screenwriters. It is a very collaborative environment and I loved being a part of the team.

Don't be afraid to try out something new! What is so great about being a video editor at Splicer Films is that there are so many types of videos you can work on, so it's the perfect opportunity to try something that feels unfamiliar.

Creative Distribution and Operations Lead

May - August 2023 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

I was very thankful to be promoted to Lead for Summer 2023 as I felt this really recognized my hard work and dedication to the Splicer Films team during my role as an intern for the Spring 2023 semester. Being a Lead, I was able to manage a small group of interns as well as lead team meetings. This greatly helped me develop my leadership skills. As Operations Lead, I was given the opportunity to advance my analytical skills by creating new workflows and visualizations to help the company effectively manage its processes and databases. This job was also fully remote, which allowed me to work flexible hours and save money on transportation.

What I wish was different

I often felt pressured to work more hours than I had agreed to in order to complete all of my assigned work for the week, and although the position was paid, I was not able to work more hours to accommodate this increased workload due to budget constraints. Similar to my previous internship experience at the company, I felt that weekly team meetings often took up too many of my weekly hours, which contributed to not having enough hours to complete assigned tasks. I often felt that having an additional Operations Lead on the team was necessary in order to ensure that critical operations within the company were functioning properly without delays/roadblocks.

Advice

I would advise those who are promoted to a Lead position at Splicer Films to actively work with their managers to optimally plan their weekly schedules so they can ensure they have enough hours to complete their assigned tasks for the week.

Film Distribution and Social Impact Intern

January - May 2023 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Splicer Films was a great choice for my first internship as they gave me the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills as well as cross-collaborate with many different functional teams and people from around the world. The company was very good at enabling effective communication across regions and time zones. Given that the internship was completely remote, I was able to work flexible hours and save a lot of money since I did not need to commute to a physical office. Managers and supervisors were great to work with as they provided timely and effective feedback on my work throughout the course of the internship. They were also very flexible and understanding of students’ class schedules and workloads, which was very appreciative during the course of the semester. Overall, Splicer Films was a great company to intern for and I would definitely recommend it for anyone interested in a first internship opportunity.

What I wish was different

I was often assigned too many tasks to complete each week, causing me to consistently work more than my agreed upon weekly hours (15-20 hours --> 25-30 hours) in order to keep up with and complete all of my assigned tasks. Weekly team meetings often took up a significant number of my total internship hours for the week, which made it so I had to allocate additional time in order to complete all of my assigned tasks for the week. I also felt that I worked more on social impact-related tasks rather than film distribution tasks, which was somewhat of a bummer since I wanted to gain more concrete experience in film distribution.

Advice

To thrive at Splicer Films, I would advise any new intern to really get to know the Splicer Films team as they are a great group of people to work with!

Screenwriting and Production Intern

May - August 2022 • Morganville, NJ

What I liked

Everyone on the team was very nice and was always happy to help when necessary. The interview subjects were all very interesting, and I really enjoyed learning their stories. None of the jobs felt tedious or like busy work. Everything and everyone was important, and I felt like an important part of the team. Schedules were very flexible, and they worked with you. I learned a lot and enjoyed my experience.

What I wish was different

I would have liked a little more organization in terms of meeting times. For the first month and a half, it felt like meetings were scheduled very last minute, and it was difficult to adapt. This did improve as the internship went on and I was in a normal routine, however.

Advice

Lean on your co-workers! They're here to help.

Digital Marketing Intern

August 2021 - January 2022 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

Upon learning about the project and first connecting with Annette (company founder) over the summer, I could almost instantly understand that working for Splicer Films would be meaningful and purpose-driven. My time at Splicer has undoubtedly and freely allowed me the space to further the project’s impact on global audiences through the skills I have to offer. The inclusive, encouraging, and uplifting culture fostered by the entire team made me never have to question whether I was valued and depended on within the company. To me, this every day reality is unique to an internship opportunity, as I don’t necessarily feel like my success was predestined to a list of mundane busywork tasks. No matter the task or project, my time at Splicer has gained me experience creating tangible communication/marketing deliverables, opportunity to collaborate and problem solve with high-achieving and motivated team members, and a newfound confidence in my own ability and potential that I know will serve me well throughout the next stages of my professional career. Though my time has come to a close, I have grown to love this project and cannot wait to watch its successes unfold from afar! Thank you for everything, Splicer Films, Annette, and team!

What I wish was different

That I had learned about the project and its contribution opportunities earlier in my college career!

Advice

Be open to any and every opportunity, even if it requires performing in unfamiliar territory! The beauty of working an internship is that you are given the ability to expand your skillset and experiment with new ways of thinking or creating. Lean into the discomfort and utilize your other team members and mentors for support and input. This is the best way to grow, and while it will not always feel easy, investing in yourself and your value as an aspiring professional this way will always be worth it!

Video Editor Intern

June 2021 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

How immersive and supportive the work environment is! At the start of this year, my editing skills were no where near what they have grown to be, all because of the resources and supportive push Annette and the team provide. I like being given the opportunity to work on high-stakes tasks and NOT feeling like an intern! I have learned so much about general production efficiencies, and have had the opportunity to have visibility into projects where I found interest. I love the team AND the story that is being told. Using my creative talents to share a story like this is a gratifying and unique experience.

What I wish was different

That I joined earlier!

Advice

Be prepared to go the extra mile! Projects are flowing simultaneous and it's important to be on top of workflow and communicating progress.
