Southern Utah University

Registration Clerk

July 2018 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

Everyone who works at the Registrar's Office is amazingly nice. They were patient with my shortcomings and always willing to help me learn. My supervisor was able to work with my schedule, even with short notice.

What I wish was different

The pay was a bit low, but the training, support, and flexibility I got along with the job made it well worth it.

Advice

I would 100% take this job again. I've learned a lot about Banner, the registration system, and how to be professional.

Student Worker

January 2016 - July 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

I worked in the History, Sociology, and Anthropology Department and I loved my experience. My boss, the Administrative Assistant, Jana Williams, was an amazing supervisor, leader, and friend. Work was often busy, but for office administration, we never had busy work. The data entry aspects of the job gave me valuable experience that will help me later in life. I enjoyed working with the professors and I loved having insight into the background work that goes into university life. The professors were often very attentive to our needs, as we were to theirs, and it made me enjoy helping and serving them in office functions.

What I wish was different

Some of those who I worked around across the university, were not receptive of my coworkers and I as student workers. We were sometimes looked down upon because of our position. When professors went out of their way to compliment and build us, it was often nice relief from the daily grind of being treated as inferiors.

Advice

I would do it again. I loved my experience and I enjoyed having the opportunity to gain friends as well as mentors within the department.

Teaching Intern

May - June 2018 • Wuhan, Hubei

What I liked

I loved being able to travel and experience life far removed from my usual while working and doing something I love. I worked closely with Dr. Julia Combs as we taught English Writing classes and it was a first-hand experience in teaching and working with students.

What I wish was different

As I was the one who set up the internship it was the first time it had ever been done and so there were a few wrinkles to iron out that I wish we could have foreseen, but we hit them for the next time.

Advice

Just go for it. I almost talked myself out of this before I'd even started and I am so glad I didn't. Not only was it the experience of a lifetime but it has severely beefed up my resume and helped seal the deal with the job I got after graduation.

Design Assistant

July 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

The wide variety of skills and experience working with things that I wouldn't have otherwise had the chance to.

What I wish was different

More focus early on with the technical side of the office. Eventually I had the chance to work with Canvas on the back end, but sooner would have been better.

Advice

Don't judge a job posting by its description. Sometimes a job is so encompassing that it's hard to describe. A description is only one perspective.

Student Web Developer

January 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

All my co-workers and my supervisor are really nice and helpful. The hours are flexible and the job exposes me to new technology and methods in the industry.

What I wish was different

There are times when no new requests come in, and you have to try and find something to do. For people with less experience, it's difficult to try to find new tasks. In these times, I try to either go back to an issue mentioned before or try to build up my skills more.

Advice

Take advantage of the people and resources at your disposal. All my co-workers have several years of experience in varying areas, so I get to learn a mixture of different subjects. They are also all willing to help.
