The mentor ship and the ability to qualify for a Public Land Corp certificate that allows me to be hired non-competitively in the federal government.

Program Coordinator

April - July 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

This was my second year working for SUU PREP and I love the relationships I have made with my coworkers, boss and the kids that attend the program. I know that being in middle school is not an easy time of life and I love that these kids, who are academically advanced beyond their peers, have an outlet and a chance to challenge themselves.

What I wish was different

I was working two jobs over the summer and that was a lot on my plate. I was exhausted by the end of the summer and I wish I had cut my hours for either one or the other job. Overall, I wish I could've dedicated myself to this job more instead of spreading myself so thin over both jobs.

Advice

Working for SUU PREP has nothing to do with my major, but I was in a similar program growing up and it made all the difference in the world in my education. It helped me to build confidence in myself as a student and really push myself to new levels. Being a part of a program outside of your major, but something that you are passionate about, is a great way to expand your resume and your horizons.

YCC Crew Leader

May - August 2019 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

This was an IIC internship, so I was working with the Forest Service in the Cedar Ranger District. I loved being outside every day in the forest, and we did a variety of jobs from trail building and repair to installing new campground features to fuels reduction. It was instructive to work with the different departments within the FS, like range, fire, recreation, and hydrology. I loved working with my youth crew, who had energy and exuberance for the duration of the summer. I got to develop my leadership and communication skills and work in a fun, positive environment that I may even pursue as a future career.

What I wish was different

Really the only things I would have liked to have done differently is worked in more areas of the Dixie National Forest. We typically had our projects near Duck Creek or Panguitch Lake, with a couple of exceptions. More exposure to other parts of the district would have been interesting. Also, I wanted to use my chainsaw more... But there's other internships for that :)

Advice

Carry plenty of water and pack a good lunch, because some of the projects are very laborious and it gets hot during the summer, even on the mountain. Invest in a good pair of work/hiking shoes, or a hybrid of the two. It's also helpful to facilitate interaction with your crew, especially at the beginning of the season to help people settle into the routine and feel comfortable. Building trust and communicating helps every other aspect of the job go smoothly.

Decent pay. Good experience in my field. Super fun working with kids.

Registrar Clerk

January 2018 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

The work was enlightening and always kept you busy. The people were a lot of fun to work with and I learned a lot.

What I wish was different

There are some parts of the job that were grueling which makes sense. Many of the students are away from the university during summer which means that you are stuck answering phone calls and emails most of the time.

Advice

Make sure you come in with a clear mind and a good additude and you are sure to have a great day.

Student custodian

May - August 2018 • Cedar City, UT

What I liked

Flexible hours.

What I wish was different

It was early in the morning, and we had too many employees, which meant we all wandered around to fill time once the building was clean.

Advice

Don’t miss work unless you have to. Once you sleep in, it gets way too easy to do it again.

International Teaching

May - June 2018 • Wuhan, Hubei

What I liked

I loved having the opportunity to teach an English Writing course at Wuhan Polytechnic University. It was even more amazing because I pursued this opportunity and made it happen. I was the first one to do this, this meant that I had a lot of extra work to do but it was incredibly worth it.

What I wish was different

Because it was the first year we didnt know what to expect and that resulted in things being less organized than I would have liked.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to do something like this, DO IT! It is incredibly rewarding and absolutely worth it. I ended up spending more money than I made but I would do it all over again. I learned so much!
