What I wish was different

IT Retail Systems Intern

May - August 2019 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

Sonic created an internship program that opened the door to many networking opportunities with interns and individuals throughout the company. Through networking you don’t just learn more about your team, but the work that takes place throughout the business. The culture of Sonic is inviting and wants everyone to learn the most they can from each other. Everyone working at Sonic is very knowledgeable about what they do and you will learn a lot. I got the opportunity to work with Retail Support, Application Support, and QA during my internship. Sonic gives you real life experiences as if you are someone working full time there. The teams were helpful with teaching me information about the technology field and skills that I can take with me throughout my career. Everyday I learned something new, and it challenged me to work harder and think harder in order to solve problems. I wish that I had more time to work with all the teams. At first I wasn't sure how I would like working with each team for just a short time, but now looking back I wouldn't change anything. The rotation exposed me to so much information and allowed me to see what I liked.

Advice

Don’t go in expecting the internship to be a certain way, but be open to new opportunities and always ask what work you can help with. This is an opportunity to learn, so be ready to do so. The supervisors are great mentors, so don’t miss the opportunity to talk with them throughout your internship for advice and clarity.

Consumer Insights Intern

May - August 2019 • Oklahoma City, OK

What I liked

Sonic provided a well-crafted internship experience that got the intern cohort engaged not just with their departments, but with the entire business. We have numerous sit downs with leaders from all different aspects of the business. Sonic is staffed by very intelligent and passionate people. As a result, if I was interested in any aspect of my department, there were employees who were willing to let me ask questions or attend meetings. My boss in particular did an excellent job providing me with not just a meaningful project, but with actual work that someone in the full-time position would do. I got an accurate sense of what working in this position would be like and always felt supported in my work and education.

What I wish was different

One expectation that I had coming into SONIC was that, like other large corporations, it would invite valuable interns to return post-graduation for full time employment. The only thing that I wish had been different was that this expectation had been reset. Some interns are staying on post-internship as contract employees, some as interns, but none are returning as full-time employees after they graduate.

Advice

When Sonic says that it values its people, it means it. If you're interested in something, ask to be a part of it. Introduce yourself to the people you want to know. Ask for the extra work that's going to set yourself apart. It's a very open and supportive environment, and as such, is what you make it.
