Signature Theatre

Education Intern

June - August 2019 • Arlington County, VA

What I liked

I learned so much about the backstage and management of theatre, which I previously did not have experience in (I am an actor). I also got to observe masterclasses and help with monologue coachings and teach classes, and I learned so much as an actor from those experiences. I filled up almost an entire notebook with the notes that I took throughout the process. I was also able to make connections with staff members through meetings with senior staff members where I was able to ask lots of questions.

What I wish was different

It would have been great to have been paid (it was an unpaid internship), but what I learned was so incredibly valuable that it was worth it. I do wish that I had been able to intern there for a longer period of time. When I left I was really getting comfortable with the staff and with my job, and was so sad to leave!

Advice

Take so many notes. I have referred back to my notes so many times, and writing things down helps you remember. Also, really enjoy the experience, take in as much as you can, and make solid connections with all the people you are working with.
