Scripps Research

research intern

June - September 2022 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

Very helpful mentor, and extremely accommodating environment that encourages you to learn and foster skills.

What I wish was different

Advice

The experience is mentor dependent, fortunately my research mentor has been incredible in every way and I have come across similarly friendly faces across the campus.

Research Intern

June - August 2021 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

I really liked the lab that I worked in. It is very innovative and I learned a lot from some of the best scientists in the world. I also liked the talks, the activities, and the benefits that the program offered.

What I wish was different

I wish that the program had better communication with the students. Sometimes I felt a little lost because the program was not being very clear.

Advice

I recommend that the program improve their communication with the students and faculty members.

intern

June - July 2019 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

Through this intern experience, I was able to learn more about data analysis and computer programming with guided mentorship and collaboration with others. I liked that I was able to work at my own pace and gain experience with programming through tasks that contributed to the project as a whole so I did not feel like I was wasting time.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship was longer! I had commitments at Grinnell that prevented me from extending my time at the program, but as an ongoing research project, there was work that could be continued.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to not get discouraged by imperfect results or small failures along the way. I came into this internship with little to no computer programming experience, and it was easy to feel frustrated when things weren't working out. I would encourage future students to come into this internship with an open mind, and to be ready to collaborate and acknowledge when you need help.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

June - August 2019 • Jupiter, FL

What I liked

I loved the people that I worked with this past summer. I also feel like the contributions that I made to the research group were meaningful and helped expand my knowledge in cancer research. Jupiter, FL is a fantastic place to work and live. I would highly recommend applying to this SURF program.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have done more from the beginning and didn't get discouraged by minor failures, as science is 95% optimization and correction. I also wish I had explored the area a bit more than I did. Otherwise, I most likely wouldn't have changed a thing!

Advice

From the very beginning, get involved. Make sure to "do your homework" and be prepared before you start each day. Keep updated on current scientific findings in the field.
