Assistant Stage Manager

June - September 2020 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I loved learning the new format of creating a theatrical performance. Our team was very strong and worked well together to bring the show to life.

What I wish was different

I wish we knew all that features Zoom had to offer before opening the show. There was an update that would've made things a lot easier!

Advice

When starting any new position on a virtual format, don't go in with any expectations. Each project will be different and be patient with yourself as everyone is still trying to understand this new method of working.

Marketing and Communications Student Assistant for the College of PSFA at SDSU

What I liked

I love writing for the website, running PSFA social media, working with motivated and kind coworkers, and making a positive impact on SDSU.

I love this job a lot, so I wish I could have experienced it on campus rather than in a virtual setting.

Have fun and look for stories happening around SDSU and in the College of PSFA. It really helps you feel more comfortable in your writing when you know what's going on around you.

Student Researcher

July - August 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I was involved in researching the best ways that musicians could collaborate virtually, since a big part of the music industry got shut down because of COVID. My absolute favorite part of my summer research was just being able to collaborate with my peers and still turn out a good final product, despite the fact we couldn't see each other in person.

What I wish was different

Since both my advisor and I were new to the program, there was a lot of things to figure out and we missed a few things along the way. It was just part of the learning curve, but it would definitely help to have better communication and a stronger outline of the entire process.

Advice

If you can, start as early as possible! Any research will take longer than you think it will, so you need to start preparing sooner rather than later. Even if it's just looking into the techniques you will be using or preparing your material, it's vital to get ahead of the curve.

Student Research Assistant

July 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I learned a lot more about the research process as it relates to economics.

What I wish was different

In person

Advice

Don't be afraid to be creative (maybe counterintuitive to economic quantitative analysis, but hear me out). There have been a lot of different issues I have been confused by through my work, but I have been most successful when I just try a lot of different things and see what works! MAJOR caveat- ALWAYSSS save copies of your work, don't want to realize that your method did not work only to find you have lost your previous data.

ambassador

June - August 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really liked being able to connect with students on a personal experience throughout the summer. Even though my job was virtual, I was able to help get new students and families acclimated to SDSU!

What I wish was different

I didn't like having to be virtual and the hours were long being on a computer. However, next year we will be in person and that will no longer be an issue hopefully!

Advice

Enjoy the conversations with students and try to remember their names and faces! (you will be seeing them again on campus)

What I liked

I liked having put into practice things that I learned in a research class.
