Culinary Camp Counselor

June - August 2022 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

This camp gave me an opportunity to share my love of cooking with kids of all ages, teaches them kitchen safety and fun recipes. It taught me more about gardening and helped the kids learn about where their food comes from. I loved getting to visit orchards, farms, and dairy farms where everyone could get involved in activities such as picking fruit or planting potatoes. There was also an opportunity to teach the kids about nutrition and how different foods affect our bodies, or how digestion works. These lessons taught me new information as well as to the kids.

What I wish was different

I wish the payrate had been higher. The amount of work I did was not proportional to what I was getting paid. These job was very stressful at times, with problematic children causing issues, and I worked very hard cleaning the kitchen, even after my shift ended. I also wish their had been more organization with some aspects. There was not much training for the counselors before camp started, it was kind of figuring it out as you go.

Advice

I would say to not get discouraged by a bad week or a few problematic kids. Overall I had an enjoyable working experience with some really amazing coworkers. It taught me a lot!
