Prudential

Software Engineer Co-Op

September 2023 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to see what code at an enterprise level looks like and the opportunity to challenge myself in learning new technologies and adapting to the methodology of the team and development workflow.

What I wish was different

I wish the duration of the co-op experience was longer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be the first one to reach out and set up 1:1's with every member of your team and those who might not be (especially if they're part of a team you're interested in learning more about). Be proactive in seeking out work and expanding on assignments you've been given.

Data Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

Everyone was very friendly and ready to help when I had questions, needed advice on next steps, and most importantly - when I wanted to build connections and learn more about the real nuts and bolts of the systems and processes the company used. This all helped to make me well-rounded and confident when speaking to senior staff and making final presentations.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in-person as that would have alleviated any feelings of boredom or distance that I felt throughout the day. I also wish the work was more code-intensive; I was able to learn a lot about data visualization and database management but not nearly enough about solving challenging problems with programming.

Advice

Make the most of every interaction! Supervisors and mentors take notice of how enthusiastic and involved you are in your work, so it pays off to be genuine and dedicated to doing a good job - especially when it comes to getting to know the people around you and performing well on deliverables.

Data Analytics & Program Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I appreciated how truly genuine and supportive both my team and the company as a whole were. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot and make meaningful connections, ultimately setting me up for future success. Also, the general fact that Prudential didn't cancel its internship program is a huge testament to how much the company values emerging talent.

What I wish was different

Covid-19 made Pru's 2020 internships remote, so I didn't really get to interact with interns from other locations. Typically there is an in-person orientation where, right off the bat, you get to meet all the other interns within the company. Maybe if Pru is remote again next summer, creative ways to connect interns virtually should be prioritized.

Advice

Network as much as possible! Everyone at Pru is extremely kind and willing to answer questions, as well as to tell you about their journey with the company.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

The people at Prudential are incredibly nice and I had no interactions with any individual that was not incredibly positive

What I wish was different

Covid shortened the program to 6 weeks, and the first week was all orientation so I only really had 4-5 weeks to work on my project which wasn't very long

Advice

It's a great place to work and have fantastic employees.

Mobile Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I like the buildings in Newark and there are plenty more events that take place here compared to Roseland. I also enjoyed the work I was given. My goal is to become a full-stack developer for web or mobile platforms and this internship tested my abilities in both fields with plenty of mentors out there to support me.

What I wish was different

I would've liked working more on team projects since I was restricted to only working on my own project the entire summer. I also wish the office was nicer. Some of the other floors looked new and modern, but my floor looked like a big mosh of gray cubicles with little access to windows.

Advice

Network as much as you can! If you find that your work isn't aligned with what you want to do full-time, chances are there's another department at Prudential that can better suit your needs. This may also involve changing buildings or entering a non-tech department, so try to diversify your network so you can experience all sides of Prudential.

UI/UX Researcher Intern

June - August 2019 • Roseland, NJ

What I liked

Got to actually conduct user testing on real users (internal software). Lots of intern activities, ways to meet the executives if you wanted to, and my team members were great to work with.

What I wish was different

They do not really have a solid UX team, there are a few UX/UI experts that are strewn about teams so you will most likely not have a team or someone else to bounce ideas off of, or to learn from. Very very self-starting.

Sales and Distributions Intern

June - August 2019 • Plymouth, MN

What I liked

The people I met in Plymouth and how everyone was so willing to help me with my projects I was assigned. I got to meet with numerous leaders in the company which gave me great exposure.

What I wish was different

nothing, I loved the experience.

Advice

Finance Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the team-oriented environment. For example, for our final project we had to work on a team to create a Financial Wellness Project. This is something incredibly unique about Prudential's culture that I find continuing to draw me back. I love the fact that there is such a large emphasis on the people, on growth, and on mentorship. On top of that, it was awesome to be in the city of Newark! The multiple Prudential buildings are absolutely beautiful and stunning -- it was a great experience being an intern.

What I wish was different

We were each assigned one mentor that was focused more on our career projection. Perhaps if we were assigned 1 or 2 other mentors on top of that, we could understand what it was like to work at Prudential from different experiences and backgrounds, therefore gaining a more unique perspective on the business itself. However, the culture, the work, and the people made the experience amazing.

Advice

If given the offer, totally TAKE IT! It was such a great opportunity meeting interns from all across the nation, getting assigned mentors, working on team projects, and getting a firsthand account of what it is like to work in the corporate world. Be inquisitive, ask questions, and reach out to people for coffee. There really is no experience like Prudential, so be positive and learn!
