Pratt & Whitney, a Raytheon Technologies Company (RTX)

Test Systems Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • East Hartford, CT

What I liked

Welcoming team that supported learning, work life balance and involving interns in ongoing projects. Position was hybrid, mainly remote with strong support and capable systems provided for home office. Well run intern program with plenty of support.

What I wish was different

More in person opportunities to interact with equipment.

Advice

Seek opportunities within personal network and do not be afraid to seek an internship with a large company; they will provide tons of resources for you to grow and learn and will likely offer future employment.

Military Engines Intern

What I liked

Pratt & Whitney has a fantastic company culture, as well as internship program. There were many events offered throughout the summer to help enhance my intern experience. I was matched with a mentor with whom I met with virtually biweekly.

What I wish was different

The entirely remote nature of this internship was extremely difficult. While I understand that it was necessary due to COVID-19, it seems as though Pratt & Whitney is moving toward an "Office of the Future" concept, which is essentially a hybrid model. While I can understand the benefits of this for full-time employees, it was very difficult to adapt to an entirely remote experience. It was difficult to feel as though you were part of the team and asking simple questions became a longer process than it would have been in person, leading me to ask less questions than I should have.

Advice

Ask questions. I know everyone says this, but I wish I would've truly listened. Find someone within your department that you feel comfortable asking anything and make a list to discuss at least once a week. Also keep a list of acronyms. Any time you hear one you're unfamiliar with, write it down and find out what it means. You'll be entirely lost if you don't learn acronyms!

Design engineering intern

May - August 2021 • East Hartford, CT

What I liked

I worked closely with other engineers in the industry and really learned a lot of engineering skills during my time there. I really liked the people there.

What I wish was different

The internship was virtual due to covid regulations. I would have preferred an in-person experience to get to interact more with other inters.

Advice

Ask questions! As many as you have.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

I really liked the product and the culture at Pratt & Whitney. Every single person in the company was passionate about what they make and how the product they make affects the country and the world as a whole. It was a very fun and challenging place to work that constantly made you want to be better.

What I wish was different

I wish that Pratt & Whitney had given more help finding housing. Not only did they give very little suggestions on where to live, the stipend they give does not cover anywhere close to relocating and paying rent in Hartford.

Advice

If there is one piece of advice I would share about this experience, it would be to make sure you work for a company/product you enjoy. I loved working on jet engines and it made going to work exciting.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • North Berwick, ME

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a fast paced environment that valued my input. I also liked how my supervisor would put me into jobs that weren't busy work and had a real effect on the company operation. Finally, I enjoyed actually being able to work with a physical process instead of sitting behind a computer all day.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time with the company because I was only familiar with the company operations and processes after about 6 weeks of working. This meant that only about 4 weeks of my work was truly productive without a learning curve.

Advice

If you are working in a manufacturing industry, go out to the production floor and actually speak with the operators running the machines. They are likely more familiar with the process than you are and may be able to shed some light on what is happening to disrupt your process. It helps to have both an engineering perspective on the problem and an operational perspective because you don't want to implement a solution that isn't realistic for the operators themselves.
