Software Engineer Intern

May 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Being treated as an equal with many other excellent engineers developing software that directly affected the lives of people I know. I loved getting thrown in headfirst to the world of fintech and seeing first hand many of the friction points and negotiations going on between banks, financial apps and government regulators. They've been very flexible with allowing me to work part-time during the school year and given the explosive rate the company is growing I quickly was seen as fairly tenured and got the opportunity to help guide many new hires. Beyond that there has just been a lot of perks joining a unicorn startup. I got to take part in the yearly week long company-wide retreat to a resort in Mexico, I had several opportunities to fly out to the HQ in San Francisco expense paid. It was great just feeling like everything in my environment (the office, teammates, culture) were all setup for my success.

What I wish was different

My project was fairly loosely defined and explorative. It had no direct path to success which meant I had to be particularly creative in how I approached it. In the end it was a great learning experience and the team was very appreciative of the work I did establish even if it had many dead-ends but it would have been nice to truly own a project and pull it over a definitive finish line. (That said I'm getting many opportunities to do that now as I've stayed on part-time)

Advice

I had previously interned at a major software company with 20k+ employees. It was a massive difference joining a company at less than 300 people. You can prepare yourself much better for the future by getting a diverse range of experience early in your career, even if the place you are at is comfortable.
