What I liked

It was a great work environment with a fun community. You put in lots of hard work but it is worth the reward, and you get to travel and meet new people while doing it.

What I wish was different

Youth Counselor

June - August 2019 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

Strong community among the other staff encouraging and supporting me through the many challenges of the job; being mobilized to courageously spread the Good News of Jesus to the campers; building relationships with campers, having fun and learning with them; being forced to grow holistically as a person to meet the constant demands of the job.

What I wish was different

I wish they had a better salad bar. That's pretty much it.

Advice

If you want to be pushed to grow in your relationship with/faith in Jesus, then this job is for you. Just know that it will really challenge you, but there are rewards waiting on the other side of those challenges. And the only way you get through those challenges is by leaning on the strength of Jesus, not your own.

Camp Counselor-in-Training

May - July 2018 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

Among the staffers at Pine Cove, there was godly community and focus on cultivating one's relationship with God, which really helped propel one when the job got tough. A great, encouraging, and energetic environment was set up for us staffers, which in turn helped us set up a great, encouraging, and energetic environment for the staffers. This was due to great leadership and quality coworkers, and a pervasive roll-with-punches attitude that kept you going when the job was a blast or when it was an extreme challenge.

What I wish was different

Due to reasons outside our control, our overseer was absent for most of my time there. His assistant filled in for him for the weeks he was gone, and while she was fully competent, she did have different expectations for me and the other counselors-in-training. The inconsistency in expectations got a little confusing, but mostly it wasn't a big deal.

Advice

Life is hard, but God is good. Push through the hard parts, because the eventual rewards are oh so good.
