What I liked

I love working here! I bring my dog to work every day, and we usually have 5-7 dogs in the office on any given day. Besides the dogs, the people are amazing. They really make it fun to come to work! This is a small company with big goals, and it's growing fast. This means there's a lot of chances to work on interesting projects, or even create projects from insights or ideas you have on your own. There's a lot of freedom, and the CEO/COO are very easy to talk to and share ideas with.

What I wish was different

Sometimes, I almost feel like I have too much work! We have a great task management system (Wrike) so it's very easy to keep track of expectations. However, I have a lot of projects that I work on outside of my "normal" role, so sometimes my list gets kind of long. It's not a problem though, because my manager is very easy to talk to and is happy to adjust work-load if I communicate about what I'm working on.

Advice

Have an open mind! This can be a fantastic place to work, but be prepared to get thrown in to some things that make you uncomfortable. By that, I mean that you will have the chance to work on projects or on teams that are outside your normal job description. To me, this has helped build upon my studies at Cal Poly and cultivate an awesome repertoire of skills to pull from.

Manufacturing Technician III

What I liked

PetDoors.com is still a relatively small company, which allows for constant interaction between all employees no matter what rank. Even working in the shop, which is separate from the office, I have the ability to talk with both the COO and CEO any time an issue arises. Ultimately, this aspect of the company has helped me feel like part of a family rather than a component of a machine. Additionally, my specific position lends itself well to accommodating employees of differing skill levels. In the shop, everyone begins working the same duties, however, based on performance, attitude, and interest, it is easy to migrate towards various other tasks. A strong work ethic is clearly appreciated and rewarded. Finally, PetDoors.com is extremely flexible with student schedules. Personally, I worked full-time for most of the summer, but I was able to get some time off for vacation. I now work part-time during school, however, I am constantly reminded by my boss that school comes first and I am welcome to reduce my hours if I become overloaded.

What I wish was different

One small issue that has come up is the slight disorganization of logistics when it comes to stocking the right amount of necessary parts. I have occasionally found that a part for a build I am working on is not available, and thus the build must be postponed. However, this may also be attributed to error by the part manufacturer.

Advice

If considering the Manufacturing Technician position at PetDoors.com, I suggest you keep in mind that with this job, you will get out what you've put into it. Although you may start off performing tasks that seem boring, you can quickly rise to work on larger scale projects that align with your interests and have a greater impact on the company and its customers. Furthermore, a good attitude and open mind can lead to making lasting friendships in this tight-knit group.

Engineering Technician

What I liked

I started working at PetDoors my Freshman year and it has been an amazing place to grow and develop my professional skills, both generally and as an engineer. The CEO and COO recognize and reward competency quickly and are very level-headed and rational managers. Both of them are trained as engineers, the CEO being a Cal Poly ME alumnus. When you're working here, the goal is always to match your skills to what needs to be done, allowing you to shape what your duties become as you show competency in the basic operations of the place. There are clear and transparent metrics of performance, and if you think there are issues with how you're being evaluated you can always be heard. Hours are very flexible, but what you get is proportional to what you put in. Be prepared to put in your hours, but the more you put in the more it's worth it. Everyone's voice is important, and if you have an idea for improvement it'll be considered no matter where you are in the company. Not only are the people friendly and helpful, but there are almost always dogs running around in the office! If that's not a big plus for you, you probably shouldn't be working for a pet door company.

What I wish was different

I only wish I had more hours to put in here. This place makes it easy to balance work, school, and general life, but personally I always want to get more done.

Advice

This place is very flexible, but it's important that you stay flexible as well. It's a dynamic place, so be prepared for new experiences if the need arises!

Data Analyst

What I liked

So many things to enjoy about working here 1) The hours are incredibly flexible. I was able to work evenings and weekends while taking classes during the school year. The CEO is a former Cal Poly student so he is willing to work with a student schedule 2) Great company culture. Everyone is so friendly! The office attire is pretty casual, t-shirt and jeans. The whole company will regularly go out to a restaurant to celebrate a sales record. Also, you can bring your dogs to the office! We usually have 2-3 dogs in the office at any given time, which is a huge morale boost. 3) The job has very obvious metrics of improvement. They use an online management system to track your projects and you have one-on-one meetings with the CEO fairly often . If you put more effort in, you receive more responsibility, salary, etc.

Advice

This job is a significant time commitment, make sure you are ready to put in the effort and hours. If you do, it will be worth it.

Assistant Project Manager

What I liked

I worked directly with the CEO and COO of the company. I gained immense first hand experience of manufacturing on a large scale, coordinating the progression of projects, and utilizing Wrike, a data analysis program, to analyze company performance and efficiency. I was able to bring my dogs to work, and there were always at least 2 dogs in the office.

What I wish was different

Advice

Being receptive and open minded is the best way to succeed at any job. Although our classes give us a great foundation, adapting to the job is the most important skill.
