Pediatrics Plus

Occupational Therapy Shadow

June - July 2018 • Little Rock, AR

What I liked

I loved the entire experience! Each day is completely different from the next. The job is very flexible and people-oriented which was my favorite part. I was able to incorporate both my knowledge and creativity.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more exposure to the different types of specializations: Autism Spectrum Disorder, feeding therapy, etc.

Advice

It is a good idea to do your research before entering a space that may be foreign to you in order to avoid accidentally being offensive or ill-prepared for any unexpected situations that you might encounter. Look at tips for working with children with disabilities and the different daily tasks and challenges of therapists before entering the workplace.

Preschool Teacher

What I liked

I worked for Pediatrics Plus abut 3.5 years before I started the teaching program at UALR, so when I was done with classes for the semester I immediately knew I would be going back there for the summer. It was discussed and they let me know that if I ever did want to return during breaks they would be more than happy to make that happen. Because I was only back for the summer, I held a different position. I absolutely love Pediatrics Plus and highly recommend it

What I wish was different

The hours I worked before leaving were more ideal, but because I was only there for the summer, my job position was different, and working around my kids' day care drop off/pick up schedule, my hours were different. I enjoyed the hours I had worked previously a bit better, but it made more sense for me to work the new set of hours.

Advice

If you are interested in working with children, especially those with developmental delays or special needs, this is a fantastic place to start. The staff and administration are all there to help you grow as an individual and to provide the best possible care for those precious kids. Also, if you're interested in any sort of therapies - Physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy - you will get a lot of experience with that as well. If you do not have a lot of patience, and a love for kids, this is not for you Be willing to open yourself up to new ideas

What I liked

Pediatrics Plus has a fantastic work environment. They just updated the ABA system in August which allowed for more students to be accepted into the classroom for ABA therapy. It is very hands-on, you never know what a work day is going to consist of because it is so client-based, and you are very supported in your job so you feel like you are a superhero at what you do (even on hard days).

What I wish was different

With the new switch to the classroom, there are so many new hire ons that are all having to jump right in and start in places that could easily seem overwhelming. Also, with all the new kids being able to receive therapy, our little population is growing and the facility is shared with OT, PT, and Speech Therapists as well so it can get a little crowded.

Advice

If kids with autism are where your heart is being called, Pediatrics Plus is a great place to jump in and fulfill that. Be willing to be dedicated for your kids and be willing to constantly learn new things.

Special Needs Teacher

May - August 2019 • Little Rock, AR

What I liked

I loved working at Pediatrics Plus. As an elementary educations major with a heart for special needs, Pediatrics Plus has an amazing year round program. Their mission statement is “empowering children to conquer the world!” And I really believe they live by that. As a teacher, I got to help children with all kinds of disabilities and impediments. It was a great learning experience and I really felt like I got to help improve some children’s quality of life. The staff are amazing and while I felt overwhelmed at times, I always had people I could call to help me with difficult situations.

What I wish was different

I wish that it was possible to have even more staff. Because of the environment we work in, teachers tend to get sick a lot. When people were out sick we were spread very thin and had to prioritize what we gave our attention to. I wish there were more staff members so we could better serve every child.

Advice

If you want to see a completed different perspective on life, get this job! The children at Peds are amazing and only want to be loved on. It’s a hard job, but it is rewarding. Some days you’ll feel like going home, but don’t! It’s the most worth while job I could ever think to have.
