Northwestern Office of Undergraduate Research

Society Reporter

June - August 2020 • Evanston, IL

What I liked

The URG office was so helpful, especially Peter Civetta, who helped me write my grant proposal and follow through with my project. Over all the resources with the office were so helpful and I couldn't have done any of it without them.

What I wish was different

I wish it didn't have to be virtual, but that is out of all of our control.

Advice

Plan plan plan! If you're doing an undergraduate research grant do a lot of preparation to really make the most of it. You are the only one holding yourself accountable for what you want to achieve so you have to be very disiplined.

Peer mentor

June - September 2020 • Evanston, IL

What I liked

This is super part time and you can basically make your own schedule. You have time to do other work or projects if you want.

What I wish was different

I wish the position was paid with more than a thank you stipend, but since it didn’t take up much time it wasn’t like the situation was totally unfair

Undergraduate Researcher

July - September 2020 • London, England

What I liked

I loved my research experience because it was so flexible and really gave me the space to take my research where it was leading me. Also, the independent nature of this project taught me so much about discipline in conducting research and really challenged me to dig deep!

What I wish was different

I wish there was more facilitation of a sense of community between all of the students conducting research over the summer!

Advice

Make a really solid research plan, but don't let it hinder you from exploring new avenues or taking your work in a different direction. The more prepared you are, the more room you will have to play!
