What I liked

It was very flexible during the Summer, and I was able to take time off for a Summer trip I had with my family. I was able to make my schedule with my boss, and make up hours on the chance I needed to.

What I wish was different

Advice

It can be grueling depending on the department you're in and what things have been planned during the Summer, and it is VERY HOT, plan accordingly with that. But all in all, it is quite fun and you create relationships with professors and members of the department, you wouldn't normally have during the school year.

I wish we didn''t have to offer a virtual option and would've been able to connect face to face with every new student and their families.

Having lots of free time to hang out with friends and do fun things around Murray. I enjoyed how laid back the job was as well

I wish we were told beforehand that we would have two weeks off unpaid. It also would have been more helpful if we had more advance notice about some of the job responsibilities we were expected to do

Advice

To have a good time at this job, it’s essential to have a group of friends to spend your extra time with. If not, you will be very bored

Summer Orientation Counselor

I loved being able to learn more about Murray State University, build relationships with staff, and welcome new students to campus.

What I wish was different

Training for the position begins in January. The position is a big time commitment prior to even beginning to log hours. This position only took place six days out of the summer so wasn't a very good "summer job" in terms of making money.

Advice

Find Opportunities. Summer jobs can be more than waitressing and working a cash register. Rather, a summer job can be great experience, resume builders, and overall fun.

I met new people on the job and earned money over the summer.

What I wish was different

The cleaning team was not always very organized so things got confusing at times. The main issue was just that it was always so hot inside and outside the building a lot of the time.

Overall it was a good experience to have and an easy way to earn money over the summer.

What I liked

I loved the closeness of the faculty. It was supposed to be a summer job but it felt like more of like a family vacation. I appreciated the efforts and dedication of others which made me want to work harder. The TRIO program was amazing and I loved working with the kids.
