Mortenson

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - July 2023 • Anadarko, OK

What I liked

Everything about this internship was excellent! I worked on a wind farm with the Power Group. I assisted the field engineers in two scopes: collection and substation. Everyone is genuine and always open to answering my questions. The engineers genuinely invested in my experience, so much so that they set me up to meet virtually with the design engineers for the substations. I also got a few chances to work with the craft teams on the collection and substation scopes. Getting my hands on the materials and helping to install the infrastructure stoked my passion for this industry.

What I wish was different

Nothing! This was a well-rounded internship!

Advice

ALWAYS ask questions, and volunteer for any opportunity that is offered. I would even say to seek opportunities not present: Ask what you can do to help. Ask to go and work with the craft members a few times throughout your internship! Working with the craft will significantly strengthen your understanding and experience as an electrical/field engineer intern.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • State College, PA

What I liked

I had the ability to choose what I wanted to learn on a weekly basis. As a construction intern, taking charge of my education is beneficial because it makes me more prepared for the industry upon graduation. Furthermore, it helps me continue to build on my experience and knowledge from previous summers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to meet other interns in the same position. Being the only intern onsite, I did not have anyone else who was working my job, with similar hours, and in a similar career stage. Being able to work with someone else in my position probably would have allowed me to further my internship experience.

Advice

Learn from mistakes. Whether watching someone else make a mistake or making it yourself, it is all a learning lesson. Construction is constantly changing so you have to be able to adapt to the climate of the situation in order to act accordingly.

What I liked

The Mortenson family is always amazing, hard-working, and so helpful in answering questions and guiding your interests. Interning with Mortenson will get you lots of hands-on experience in the field and with online coordination. There is rarely a day where you feel bored or you have too little on your plate, and learning that organization and where best to apply yourself is important.

What I wish was different

More assignments and shadowing early on. I feel very comfortable with any job given to me now, but wish I was shown the ropes earlier so I could get to this place earlier. However, I had some wonderful mentors that have helped me feel more confident with my job success and asking any questions that come up.

Advice

Always look for something new to do, and with someone new, whether they are in the office or with the craft teams. You always find the best experiences by reaching out to others, and Mortenson is the perfect place to build a network.

Safety Engineer Intern

May 2021 • Pocahontas, IA

What I liked

What I enjoyed most was how welcoming and great the culture is here at Mortenson. Everyone onsite really buys into the Mortenson values in teamwork, safety, and responsibility. Especially this internship being my first, they walked me through everything and welcomed and answered any questions I had.

What I wish was different

I wish I was a bit more experienced in the field of safety and more familiar with wind construction sites coming in so it was not as big as a transition.

Advice

Don't ever hold back a question. Here at Mortenson, both the craft and the supervisory positions are more than happy to answer any question you have and start conversation. Most of the time you will learn much more than just simply the answer to the original question.

Civil Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I was able to gain real-life engineering experience while being on a job site every day for 6 weeks this summer. I was able to see the building in the works and all of the processes that are necessary to successfully create a building.

What I wish was different

Due to the current pandemic, my internship was cut in half to 6 weeks instead of the full 12 weeks. I wish that I would've been able to be there the whole summer.

Advice

Mortenson had an amazing internship program that allowed me to gain experience in many aspects of the civil engineering field. I was paired with a mentor and a supervisor, so I always had someone I could go to for advice or any questions I had during the internship.

Engineering Intern

July - August 2020 • Coralville, IA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the group of people I worked with. They all cared about my development. They wanted to me to learn as much as I could, and they encouraged me to ask questions. Everyone I worked with was very approachable and understanding.

What I wish was different

I wish that it could have been longer. The pandemic shortened my internship but with the safety protocols they had in place, I would have been comfortable working for the entire summer.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can, as often as you can. Asking questions starts a dialogue with your coworkers and those conversations often lead you to learning more than you would have thought.

What I liked

Everything. It was awesome being out in Wyoming. My project was one of the biggest wind turbine farms in the country so it was an great experience being on that project.

What I wish was different

My living situation wasn't the best. Low end studio apartment with no stove, so I had to do a lot of grilling when making food.

Advice

If you have the chance to travel, do it. There's so many great things to see about this country. Don't limit yourself. I was able to spend a weekend in Yellowstone National Park, as well as some other National Parks.
