I loved the entire experience. It was nice to have support when relocating and able to have housing when I got there.

Advice

Make sure to continue to ask questions and introduce yourself to everyone. You never know who you will be able to meet in a day!

What I liked

Mortenson is a fantastic company to work for. I learned way more then expected. Mortenson is a company that is going to give you responsibility of you can handle it. I was managing sub contractors and doing work that greatly impacted the job.

What I wish was different

Nothing I had a fantastic experience

Advice

Just say yes, be willing to take on tasks that you aren't completely comfortable doing. If you need help the project team has your back.

Design Phase Intern

What I liked

I got to experience a lot of different aspects of the construction industry, such as preconstruction activities, meetings with owner reps, and estimating. I also got to interact with people of various backgrounds, like the consulting architects and engineers on the project.

What I wish was different

With how the timing of my internship worked out and the fluctuation of busy and slow periods of construction, the first half of my internship was on the slower side. They tried to provide me with a lot to do, which for the most part worked, but having periods of very little to do was inevitable.

Advice

Learn as much as you can, and ask questions, from day one!

Advice

Do as many job interviews that you can, get as many offers as you can. Practice and be great in interviews to gain experience and leverage for the career you really want.

feild construction managment intern

What I liked

I loved the responsibility I was given on the project. I wanted to do as much as I could to benefit the project and my supervisors gave me more responsibility as I progressed. I really enjoyed the wind industry as a whole and Mortenson as a company the employees were awesome, very approachable, patient and understanding of my questions. I wanted to learn as much about the wind industry as I could in the short time I was on site. My supervisory was very accommodating and allowed me to go to another project to see more of the industry towards the end of my internship. Being able to see the tight knight community feel to the company was tremendous, even though the company is massive everyone makes you feel like family. Mortenson preaches that as one of there steps to success and you can tell it helps on the job site.

What I wish was different

I wish the projects would have been a little more organized in regards to where I was going to be placed for the summer. My original project never got started so I bounced around the state of Iowa to multiple projects for training until they assigned me to another project.

Advice

Be prepared for a fast paced work environment and lots of hours in the wind industry. Just do your best and you will catch up quick and be on your own and doing a great job before you know it.

They really put a lot of time in with their interns and are likely to hire you post college if you do a good job.

What I wish was different

Sometimes I wanted a little more to do but most of the time I was very busy.

Advice

You have to put in work to find an internship they won’t find you. Go to career fairs and meetings to talk to people. That’s how you will get one.

Corporate Safety Engineer Intern

What I liked

Excellent company culture. Great pay. Allowed to work independently and learned mostly through my own research to solve problems on site.

What I wish was different

There were several new safety personnel on site that ranged from little experience to no experience. My mentor was often busy working with other people, and I did not receive much guidance.

Advice

Be ready to step in and help with whatever needs done. Even if it doesn't apply directly to your job scope, being known as a contributor is going to be good for your professional reputation. If you feel that you can contribute more to your team, ask for more. That being said, don't overstep your bounds, understand that as an intern you are there to learn.
