Morgan Stanley

Private Wealth Management Intern

July - August 2019 • Florham Park, NJ

What I liked

I like how the staff were very welcoming of me to the firm. They were very helpful, always willing to help me out and teach me. I liked this internship because of the immense growth that came out of it. The work environment made my experience enjoyable as well. I liked how I was able to foster genuine relationships with other coworkers and be able to learn new things everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish I had connected and conversed with the other interns more to discuss our individual experiences. I wish I had come in better prepared, such as being more proficient in excel and understanding the financial landscape more as a whole.

Advice

Any internship or experience is what you make it. If you approach it with an eager to learn and perform attitude you will receive and get the most out of the opportunity. I was able to learn so much from this internship because of this. On the other hand if you come there will a lackadaisical and mediocre work ethic/mindset then the result of the experience will be nothing except subpar.

Summer Analyst

What I liked

The experience was amazing. I learned so much about the financial industry and how the operations of a financial firm like Morgan Stanley work on an internal level. I was able to shadow many teams and find what I liked. Excellent opportunity.

What I wish was different

I thought this experience was exactly what I was looking for and would not change anything.

Advice

Make sure you put your best foot forward everyday at work. It is an amazing firm and some times when you are going through trainings, etc, it can seem boring but you are learning new things everyday and it’s important to be a sponge and absorb it all!

What I liked

Highly competitive program. Great learning experience. Gained a ton of knowledge on hedge fund industry and prime brokerage business

What I wish was different

More prep prior to program about Prime Brokerage Business and what the program entailed.

Advice

Really great program. Competitive to get into but about 2/3 of analysts get return offers. Advice would be to network as much as possible. Go to Women/Diversity events to meet people who currently work there in a more intimate setting.

Summer Finance Analyst

June - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I really liked the structure of the program. It wasn't just 8 hours of desk work everyday. HR hosted tons of informational events such as Senior Speaker Series and Excel workshops. Each intern was treated like a full time employee. We were given meaningful work that was integral to Morgan Stanley's function. Everyone at the firm was incredibly welcoming and always went above and beyond to make sure we were enjoying our time there.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more facilitated shadowing events. We were always encouraged to reach out to individual teams on our own and schedule shadowing/one-on-one meetings, but most employees were swamped with work and that made it difficult to schedule time. Perhaps HR could create weekly or biweekly events that showcase various teams and introduce who they are to the intern group as a whole.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity you get. Get to know as many people as you can and learn about what they do at the firm. There are many outside-of-work group activities such as volunteer events, Orioles games and game nights; go to all of them! Not only are they so much fun, but they allow you to get to know your peers and coworkers outside of the office.
