Wealth Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

Learning is not limited to technical knowledge. One also learns non-technical skills such as communication skills by conversing with clients on the phone. The blend of technical and non-technical skills led to accelerated individual growth.

What I wish was different

Morgan Stanley is a big firm with smaller groups, each with their clientele. Due to the structure of the firm, I wish I was able to interact with other groups within the firm.

Advice

Don't hesitate to ask questions and ask for more challenging work.

Technology Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I got to work directly with experienced full time employees and gained valuable development experience. I also got to network with other interns and experience New York City.

What I wish was different

I wish I had some interns in my team.

Advice

We are all capable of more than we realize. At the beginning of my project, I felt that I did not know what to do and wouldn't be able to complete my project. Nonetheless, I was able to complete my project early thanks to the help of my team and the many resources available at the firm.

Technology Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Pretty chill environment, lots of other interns to spend time with, people are nice, some fun intern events.

What I wish was different

For technology/software development, the development life cycle can be a bit slow since you have to wait for manager approvals, etc. Would be better if that could somehow be sped up for interns, if possible.

Advice

try to proactively find more work to do and remember there are lots of teams, so everyone's experience will be different.

Strategy Intern

June - July 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The impactful role I played in developing cutting edge strategic programs for a renowned company.

What I wish was different

The commute was over 2 hours door to door which took its toll on me.

Advice

At banking internships, they work you very hard. You have to put your head down, be thorough and efficient in every project and get that return offer.

Investment Banking Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Was given lots of responsibility early on, was explicitly expected to learn as much as I could from the summer. High return offer rate (they make very clear that they have a full-time slot available for every intern if they do well) means interns aren't competitive with each other and help each other out. Paid pretty well

What I wish was different

Long hours, but that's par for the course.

Advice

do your research first. If you go in without fully understanding just how hard it's going to be , I doubt you'll be happy with it. Penn is one of the few places where tons of upperclassmen will have done something like this before them, so talk to them about it and learn if it really is something that's right for you before pulling the trigger

Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the rotational aspect because it allowed me to get a broad understanding of the business across both equities and fixed income. The people on the team were really great and supportive.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication had been better and that the expectations had been more clear up front.

Advice

The opportunity was great in terms of learning about the business but also to meet a variety of people across the firm, not just in my division. I would advise leveraging your network and taking advantage of every opportunity.

Summer Analyst

May - August 2018 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work as a Summer Analyst for an institutional consulting firm. I enjoyed being able to accept responsibility while using the information I learned in classes in a meaningful work enviroment.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could interact with more of our clients. The consulting firm that I worked for controls the endowment funds of many non-profit organizations and higher level education. Being able to see how the return on their investments is making an impact for their organizations/schools would have been very enjoyable.

Advice

Many students believe that they need to have a picture perfect job when they intern. Try somehting different because you may learn a whole new persepctive on careers.

Private Wealth Management Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The culture of the company cannot be described other than open minded, charismatic and striving for success. Having the honor of being surrounded by like minded individuals that push you to better yourself the moment you walk into the office is truly beneficial. They give you a mentor to look up to and always guide you towards the right things to do with the work your assigned. At the end of the work day, they also ask if you want to go to happy hour to meet others in the office and really absorb the company culture. You also never truly learn the craft until you get to work in a big office and are assigned work. Applying the school knowledge to the actual craft was astonishing but also very difficult because it only covered about 20% of the material you needed to know.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Never stop learning and developing yourself. In your free time always try and read articles, network with professionals, observe your superiors and how they conduct themselves in the work and with clients. If you're ever on your phone and not utilizing all the assets that are presented in-front of you, you're only doing yourself a disservice.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the people I met this summer, as well as the opportunities I had to learn develop and grow at such a big firm. It was an incredible experience to constantly network and meet new people and develop relationships but also be challenged at work in a new manner. I was constantly thrown more projects to see how I can perform in them and I enjoyed working on them as I grew my skill-set and worked on them diligently.

What I wish was different

Something I wish that would be different is the opportunity to get more experiences under my belt. Being that I didn't rotate across different desks and was on the same team the entire summer, I wasn't able to learn a variety of different topics and areas as I would have in a rotational program. However, the bright side to this was that I was able to become a master of the policies and calculations done in my team and I was able to take on more responsibility since I had worked on the same concepts all summer.

Advice

A piece of advice that I would share to others is don't be afraid to ask questions/ don't be afraid to ask for more work. Always set goals for yourself as you progress through your work but also ask for more work before you finish your current assignment. It shows you have the drive and capacity to handle it.

Technology Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

-Being able to contribute to the team's work & being recognized for the work I did -Learning new technologies & tools -The team I was working with & getting a glimpse into their work

What I wish was different

-Matching process with teams is largely done behind the scenes, ie no option to "interview" the team you'd be working with, but this changes for full-time opportunities -Onboarding/set up logistics wise & understanding structure of your team/role within the organization is slow and a bit difficult to access

Advice

-Be open to asking for help. Figuring out the balance between getting things done independently and knowing when to ask for help was one of my bigger struggles, but I felt that I improved here as I went on further in the program. -Get to know other people in the company aside from just your immediate team & managers. This applies for almost every company out there (including startups). Really take the opportunity to learn about the work other people are doing & how it fits into the organization.

Summer Analyst

May - July 2018 • West Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed the responsibility and education provided. Each project was directly involving clients' funds---whether I was actively creating a financial plan for a family or analyzing various investment instruments to reduce taxes and risk for specific clients. Additionally, my superiors offered one-on-one sessions to teach me the ins-and-outs of the business.

What I wish was different

This isn't really anything that can be changed about the experience, but I wish it were a faster paced environment.

Advice

Take advantage of people's expertise and know that you can contribute valuably to the firm. Always ask clarifying questions and communicate that you're willing and eager to do more, if you want more of a challenge.

Global Capital Markets Summer Analyst

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Welcoming team and real world experience. Felt like an integral part of the Fixed Income Derivatives team early in the summer.

What I wish was different

Start date conflicted with final exams, I wish there was some flexibility either by the employer or Stanford to make the transition easier.

Compliance analyst

May - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

This internship was well organized and placed us in teams that reflected our interest and personalities. We were able to complete some of the same tasks that our teams completed while working on a team project geared towards the improvement of efficient metrics collection and utilization in the legal and compliance division.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer with the option to work over the fall semester.

Advice

If you intern for Morgan Stanley maximize your experience by speaking to coworkers and managers about their career path and experience at the firm. Also, be apart of the public speaking club.

Sales and Trading Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked that I was able to interact and network with a lot of different people and rotate through multiple desks rather than stay on one desk. Morgan Stanley is great in that it offers a lot of mobility for their junior analysts since there's both an analyst and associate rotational program for full-time employees that we learned about during the internship.

What I wish was different

No complaints, really. If you're interviewing for S&T, you're probably already aware that you're going to be working for at least 12 hours per day, but at least you don't have to work on weekends.

Advice

Be sociable and talk to as many people as possible!
