What I liked
The REU program was a great way to gain research experience in chemistry. While I was there, I was able to learn multiple lab techniques and hone my skill as a researcher. The professor and graduate students that I worked under held me to high standards that helped me understand what it is like to work in a graduate lab. I also participated in a poster seminar, where I was able to present my research and practice public speaking skills.
What I wish was different
I wish that I got to do more of the data processing that the graduate students handled. I created and ran the samples that were prepared, but I didn't get to follow through with the computational work that was done after the raw data was collected.
Advice
The one thing that I would suggest is to not be afraid to try out different things. The people in the lab understand that you might not have seen all of the techniques that are being used. Instead of shying away from the opportunity, use it to learn something new and practice a technique that you may be unfamiliar with.
