Milwaukee Tool

Channel Marketing Intern

June - August 2023 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

There is an amazing community of workers at Milwaukee Tool. The early talent team is incredible at making the experience special for the interns. Right off the bat, I felt trusted in my position and very supported by manager, my manager's boss, and even my manager's boss' boss.

What I wish was different

I was placed in channel marketing which was an invaluable experience, but I did learn that I would prefer and fit into a different marketing department like brand or product more! Also to be noted, I did not ask for a certain marketing department.

Advice

Talk to everyone! All the full time workers are more than willing to chat with you, just reach out!

Brand Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

The culture at Milwaukee is unbeatable! Everyone I met- fellow interns and full time staff- were intelligent, driven, and fun people to work with. I felt valued as an intern, and understand how the culture words are truly lived by. I also had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects allowing me to gain different types of experience providing a broad view of what it's like to really work at Milwaukee. I valued working for a company that is innovative and promotes sustainability. Overall, I enjoyed the people, the strong emphasis on professional and personal development, the variety of work I did, as well as the social aspect with food truck events, sporting games, and happy hours.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

Great culture and interesting but challenging work! I worked in the accessory concept department and had numerous projects that required rapid concept prototype development and testing. Not only did I learn a ton on the technical side, my communication and presentation skills grew substantially.

What I wish was different

Out of their control, but the pandemic resurgence towards the end definitely made my final presentation and other events feel less impactful/valuable. Other than that I would say the onboarding process was a little daunting for the first couple weeks since I felt like everything (projects, tasks, etc.) was thrown at me at once but that's where I also experienced the most growth.

Advice

Don't feel like you have to sit and struggle by yourself to find a solution. Network with people inside and outside of your team to gather more knowledge on how to tackle a particular roadblock you are faced with. Take initiative even if you don't exactly know how things will turn out.

Reliability Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

The culture is amazing. Everyone is excited to be at work and collaborating on projects. The casual office setting makes you feel much more comfortable and laid back. The job itself allowed me to challenge myself and gain a ton of knowledge and experience in my field with people who were happy to answer questions and give advice.

What I wish was different

Truly nothing. I loved working at Milwaukee Tool and I wouldn't have changed a thing about the experience.

Advice

Definitely reach out to anyone you may need because they are probably more than happy to assist you with what you are doing. I met a lot of new people, many of whom were not part of my team or department, just through reaching out and asking questions or offering a hand with what they were working on.

Procurement

January 2021 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

I loved how I was treated like a full time employee. From the start, everyone was so kind and welcoming. Everyone introduced themselves and offered to help in anyway possible. I was also able to jump into some projects that made a real impact in our business.

What I wish was different

I really don't wish anything was different. I had a lot of different projects or assignments that I was able to do which kept me busy and interested, and it also made me feel like I was making a impact to our department, even as an intern.

Advice

The one thing I would say it reach out and introduce yourself to people you work with. Don't be afraid to meet people because it will pay off big time. Everyone here is incredibly caring and kind, and they will do whatever they can to help you succeed in your role. Even if it is a quick question, everyone would go out of their way and pause what they are doing to help you.

Concept Engineering Intern

June - November 2021 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

The company values their interns highly. I was doing meaningful work with expectations for leadership, and I was able to schedule meetings with anyone I was interested in to hear about them and what they love about their work. Milwaukee Tool has successfully scaled up the fast-paced, high-mobility atmosphere of a small company in a full industry setting.

What I wish was different

The office was pretty slow in filing some paperwork for a niche case I was in, which was definitely inconvenient, but not detrimental.

Advice

Step up, go beyond! There's so much room to do exciting work here at the company and generally speaking, if you see something nearby you you think should be done, they will give you the resources to make it happen.

Packaging Engineering Intern

July - December 2019 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

I liked that Milwaukee Tool was a fast paced high growth company. Everyday something new was being built and a new project was worked on. I never looked at the clock wondering how many hours were left in the day. Also, the company is filled to the brim with helpful and patient people who will teach you everything you want to know.

What I wish was different

This is definitely a good internship to take if you want to see the design and development side of packaging. You'll be using Solidworks and ArtiosCAD to design package prototypes from start to finish (including testing), instead of outsourcing it to other countries/companies. I personally enjoyed it but didn't know going in and had little to no experience with either of those software's. The good thing is many full time coworkers there will spend hours of their time teaching you the software even when it's not their project.

Advice

Take it day by day, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Don't be afraid to ask all coworkers for assistance, as sometimes the person you're working with on a project might not be available to answer questions and there might be someone else who can help.

Information Technology intern

June - August 2020 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

They were one of the few companies in the area to continue on with their internship despite covid. They were also able to have the interns in-person in a safe environment which allowed them to learn the culture of the company.

What I wish was different

Not too many opportunities to network, mainly due to covid.

Advice

Make sure to communicate to your manager what you are interested in and to provide feedback as much as you can.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

I liked the culture, and the openness of my team to help me learn and understand as I collaborated with them on projects

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten assigned to my term long project sooner. It took a couple of weeks to establish the scope of the larger term long projects I ended up working on.

Advice

Be assertive when talking to your manager -- As an intern it feels tempting to not want to take up peoples' time, but the only way you can continue to create real value for the company is to be lwarning and asking questions, even if they seem dumb.

Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

The relevant hands on work makes you feel like what you are doing matters and is important. There is never any busy work and everything you do is relevant to your career and helps you gain experience to succeed in the real world.

What I wish was different

Sometimes there are slow days. The best thing to do on slow days is to reach out to other engineers or to research something that interests you that is related to the job.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible. Most of the time people would love to talk to you about what they do or about a specific topic.

Brand Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

During my summer at Milwaukee Tool, the two aspects I particularly enjoyed were the open culture that encompasses this company and the hands-on experience they want you to have. I was thrown into several projects right from the beginning, enabling me to learn new things while utilizing the knowledge from my past experience. Some of the projects I took on included a commercialization plan for new products, executing my own contest, and assisting with social care. Throughout these projects, all team members I worked with were easy to talk to and assisted in any way they could.

What I wish was different

Advice

The first piece of advice I have would be the fact that you do not need to know anything about power tools to work here. The amazing part about this internship was coming in not knowing much and now walking away with an incredible amount of knowledge of the industry. Another opportunity I would encourage interns to partake in would be having coffee-talks with other employees (either those in your designated department or outside). I had several of these talks throughout my summer, and it opened my eyes to the financial, supply chain, and industrial design sector of this business.

Product Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Brookfield, WI

What I liked

I was initially interested in Milwaukee Tool because of their unique marketing approach. Milwaukee does a fantastic job of forming their marketing strategy around the end user to best meet their needs. I really enjoyed learning about Product Marketing through hands on experience on job sites, at demo and test labs, through individual projects, and during a 2 month Capstone commercialization project. The company culture is fantastic. Milwaukee is focused on innovation and encourages its interns to offer new solutions and think outside of the box. The employees at Milwaukee are very welcoming, helpful, and encouraging. Throughout the summer, I pushed myself outside my comfort zone, creating opportunity for continuous learning and growth.

What I wish was different

I worked on individual pricing projects most of the summer which gave me the opportunity to gain invaluable insight on pricing strategy and how those decisions affect sales and the company at large. Although I got to participate in a large range of projects with my team and other Milwaukee employees, I would have liked to have a wider range of individual projects.

Advice

Milwaukee Tool is such a great company to intern at, especially in the marketing department. I would encourage students to vocalize their interests to their managers in order to work on a variety of individual projects throughout the summer. Also, don't be afraid to let your manager know if you have too much or too little work. They are happy to adjust according to your work schedule. Last, don't let your lack of power tools deter you from this internship. You will pick it up really quickly and enjoy the challenge.
