Intern

May 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work with members of the Milwaukee community to address their legal issues. Often, the court system can be complicated, financially and emotionally demanding, and inaccessible. Providing free and personal assistance to people that may not otherwise have the means to successfully self-represent was really rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish the training had been a little more extensive. I do think the most effective way to learn the legal forms was through experience, but it would have helped to have a little more formal training before diving right in.

Advice

Come in every day with a positive attitude and warm presence. Anybody who is seeking free legal help for divorce, child support, custody, etc. is probably not going to be in the best of moods. Try to be a kind, understanding, and knowledgeable resource for someone who is likely going through something very difficult. While knowledge of the legal system is obviously important, empathy and kindness can be just as valuable.

Family Forms Intern

May - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I was able to work with family and civil attorneys. I gained useful knowledge about the court system and family law. I worked under the supervision of attorneys, but I had lots of personal responsibility. I was also never bored. I was constantly doing something, which made the time pass very quickly.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had the opportunity to work more with the Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic. This was a really good way to see how lawyers interact with clients and hear real legal advice.

Advice

If you are interested in law, this is a really good way to learn about the process people go through to file motions and how few resources there are in the civil world. Highly recommend this internship!
