Midwest Pool Management

Lifeguard

February 2012 - August 2017 • Independence, MO

What I liked

-Building relationships with other teens living in the area that went to school with me or attended other schools in the area. -Learning time management. You can work as little as part time to as much as 60 hours + if you wanted to. -Opportunities for growth into management, training, operations, etc. -Being a return lifeguard and switching from novice to experienced lifeguard is such a rewarding feeling. -Star-guard certification was easy enough to learn and teach at an affordable cost. -Company wide bonding events such as community service projects, lifeguard championships, and end of the season and/or Holiday party. -Office personnel is very helpful and interactive during the entire summer. They don't just sit behind a desk and handle only administrative work.

What I wish was different

-Better staffing. A lot of time staffing was spread too thin. They might be a great company for the cities to employ and rightfully so, but for the staff to always be spread so thin this would cause turn over and lack of return lifeguards in later seasons. -"one guard pools" should never be one guard pools for the safety of their primarily underaged or very young adult staff they employ. -Conflict management training for all management. For most of the management this is their first management position. It would be helpful for the managers to be more prepared of what they will experience in the summer and how to handle it.

Advice

For many teens, lifeguarding is their first job. The initial fear of saving someone, performing first aid, or even working at a different facility that is not your home facility is min compared to all these things have to offer and teach a teenager. That fear also goes away buy the end of the first summer. This job helps teens build character and build relationships/a network with others.

Lifeguard Manager

May - August 2019 • Washington, MO

What I liked

The hours were very flexible, the pay was alright but I got overtime frequently, and I got to be outside and among people my own age.

What I wish was different

I wish I hadn't had to work so late each night, because I missed a lot of family and friend events that I wished I could have attended.

Advice

Do it! I got a lot of experience in managing people, planning tasks, and diagnosing things that went wrong. So far it has served me very well as a talking point with employers.

What I liked

Midwest Pool Management provides a secure and team-focused work environment that encourages cooperation and diligence. I greatly enjoy my time working with MPM as a supervisor.

What I wish was different

Some safety regulations fall short at certain pools, and scheduling can be a bit of a mess. However, if you stay on top of your own schedule, everything will fall into place eventually.

Advice

If you like being outside and working with people, this is the job for you! Be prepared to take safety seriously.
