Menards (11390)

Manufacturing Management Intern

January - April 2023 • Plano, IL

What I liked

I liked the freedom and how flexible Menards was with me. They followed through with my school schedule and helped navigate through the experience.

What I wish was different

I probably would have preferred to do it in the summer, just to take advantage of being focused on one shift and more hours worked.

Advice

Be adaptable and open to people. You must learn to know and respect your team in order for them to listen to you.

What I liked

The community was amazing! They can seem a little rough because the job is arduous, but overall very welcoming and considerate for personal issues. Scheduling was also very easy.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to do more than the lowest jobs in my department. I was the youngest at 17, so I couldn’t drive a forklift, and I couldn’t get a pay raise or benefits since it was a summer job.

Advice

If you like hard work all day, whenever works best for you, this is the job. It’s not annoying to go into work. Come prepared with lunch and hydration, but also the employees care about you and will tell you if you’re over doing it. Just work hard and people will like you.

Management Intern

May - August 2021 • Plano, IL

What I liked

The Management Intern program at Menard's was great. There was a great combination of blue-collar and white-collar tasks in the program, and the 12 weeks of projects gave enough time to balance with daily tasks. The people were great, the location was convenient, the pay was good, and the hours were flexible. Overall my experience was very good.

What I wish was different

Although the hours were flexible, they were a bit long at times. Other than that the program is solid.

Advice

- Be prepared to work on your feet and also do computer work - Pay attention to your surroundings

June - August 2021 • Ankeny, IA

What I liked

The people working at Menards are phenomenal. There was a large mix between the high school, college kids, and full-time employees at an older age. Everyone was so grateful that there were people wanting to work at this time.

What I wish was different

This was a really hard time to start a job. We had to adjust to different COVID rules about whether we wear masks, and the prices of lumber being so high left a lot of customers frustrated. We were super understaffed and I found myself working 5-10 hours more than I requested each week.

Advice

There are lots of aisles where goods can be, and if you can, start memorizing where things are to better help customers. Also, get to know the people you work with- everyone is much nicer than you think, it can be a little intimidating if you don't know a lot about hardware.

Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Golden Valley, MN

What I liked

I liked how my the manager of my department I was interning was very personal and took time to teach me different things. The store managers also were very helpful. It was a very fast paced environment and I dealt with a lot of different people.

What I wish was different

It is a very physically demanding job, so people do have to be prepared to be standing, walking, and lifting things constantly throughout the day.

Advice

Go into new settings with an open mind and ask a lot of questions when you don't know what to do. That way, certain people can teach you and train you in on what to do.

What I liked

I was able to be outside and engage in customer service

What I wish was different

A more strategic and organized fashion of how the place was run.

Advice

It taught me a new skill of seeing the different ways customers like to be helped and what they expect from an employee. I was able to develop skills of dealing with unhappy customers in a calm and collected way along with assisting guests that were very grateful for my help and the service they were provided.
