Advice

Before you get a summer job, or any part time job during school, try your best to make it something that will be applicable to what you want to do in the future. Even if it’s just answering phones or running errands at a company your interested in. I would only recommend this job to people who are interested in management after college.

What I liked

It was great! the workers were all really nice and made it a great place to work. My supervisors were really knowledgable and were very helpful when I didn't know how to do anything. the work wasn't terrible and i looked forward to going back everyday to work more.

What I wish was different

Nothing really, the pay was good, co-workers were great, job was quite simplistic. Maybe allowing me to stay employed while i was at school but you can only wish for so much.

Management Intern

June - September 2019 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I liked that the internship was designed in the way that - if you do well, you would receive the opportunity to hold a position within the company, even if not for the one you were working. For example, I was a management intern, but they considered hiring me for a purchasing role at their main office.

What I wish was different

I wish it would've been shorter. The internship was 16-weeks long. Usually, they are about 12-weeks. Also, I wish it paid more.

Advice

Do not pursue this internship unless you are passionate about retail. It is a demanding industry if you have no experience and the internship is designed in a way to prepare you specifically for a role at Menards or in retail management.

What I liked

The amount of training was perfect. The managers were very friendly and handled the coronavirus situation well. I liked how Menards used proper safety procedures and made sure customers and employees feel safe throughout the pandemic. Overall, I really enjoyed my job and the experience I was able to gain over the summer.

What I wish was different

Due to the coronavirus, the work environment and new guidelines was pretty difficult to get used to at first. The only thing I wish were different were the circumstances involving COVID-19. Despite the initial challenges, working at Menards was ultimately very rewarding and it is one summer that I will never forget.

Advice

During my employment, I found it very helpful to ask questions during my training and essential to ask trainers and/or managers for help getting familiar to the job. In addition, asking questions about topics I was unfamiliar with or concerns I had during a shift really helped me to better assist guests that come into the store. Being able to ask for help was something that really helped me adapt in my position as a Team Member. In this way, I was more knowledgeable and prepared to assist guests with their experience in the store as well as better represent Menards as an employee.
