MemorialCare

Surgery Center Volunteer

June - August 2019 • Fountain Valley, CA

What I liked

I was able to shadow many different surgeons and anesthesiologists. Everyone was very welcoming and willing to teach me. Since I was the only volunteer, the hours were very flexible, and I was able to choose the days I came in each week. I got to connect with the patients and help out the PACU nurses. When I wasn't in the OR, I wheeled the patients down to the valet area to get picked up.

What I wish was different

While not shadowing in the operating rooms, I mainly cleaned and dressed beds. This did not bother me, but some people may find it boring.

Advice

Get to know the nurses because they helped me get permission to watch various interesting procedures.

Advice

It is a rough journey but it is worth it. It takes time and dedication. Of you are married and have kids, it is just as hard on them as well so prepare for it, talk about it together and support each other.
