Research and Development Chemist

What I liked

Melaleuca has great company culture. Everyone really cares about the mission statement, and tries to make it a reality in the workplace. As an intern in R&D I was given my own project to work on over the summer and to develop as I saw fit. My lab team allowed me to be independent and would help me if I asked.

What I wish was different

More variety in projects and more cross-trainings in other departments. Working in R&D we only get to see the initial steps to a new product. It would have been informative to meet with other department teams or interns to discuss the subsequent steps in marketing or branding a new product.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions, and develop a good relationship with your mentor and supervisor. There is so much to learn at this company, and being willing to put forth great effort will go a long way here!

What I liked

I loved the work atmosphere at Melaleuca. I felt very welcomed and everyone was so kind. I loved that the projects I worked on. I was working on real projects with others on the team and I really enjoyed that.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship lasted longer. Since I was working on a lot of projects, some of them had to be passed off to other people when the internship was over.

Advice

Don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there in the internship. Ask questions and get to know people. Doing those things will help you have a better experience and help you stand out.

What I liked

I loved Melaleuca so much! they truly care for their employees. They have created a safe atmosphere to learn and to grow. They are also very flexible and come to understand your circumstances.

I wish that I would have participated more in the small things they provided their employees.

Advice

Working for melaleuca is a great experience to learn how to problem solve and still answer with a christ like attitude. You learn to work as a team and to help those in need as well. Although it is not a long term career job, if you find yourself working for melaleuca learn all that you can it comes in handy.

They continue to teach me empathy and understand someone’s problems and learn to solve them. The team environment is so fun, and it is great with my school schedule.

I wish that they were more lenient with giving days off, but who does not wish for that? It kept me honest and consistent with my schedule.

They gave me some really meaningful projects to work on that made me feel like I was actually contributing to the team. My team was really friendly and included me in what they were doing.

It would have been good to have more structure. I didn't always have a lot of work to do even after I did everything I could possibly think of.

Advice

Take it as an opportunity to learn more SQL and to understand how business logic works together with tech teams.

The extra steady income that my husband and I were able to make during the summer was a nice help financially.

What I wish was different

As with working in any call center, I guess the only thing I could've hoped to be different was the amount of negative interactions I had with angry customers over the phone.

You make the experience what it is. Your attitude will always matter and make all the difference in any job or life experience.

They environment was very positive and the work was fun and enjoyable.

What I wish was different

The communication between the supervisors and the employees specifically when it came to schedule changes. I would have preferred they would have talked to me personally on a quicker basis than talking with others and not informing what they were thinking.

Advice

It was a good job, but it would be best to start it in a time where you don't have a lot to do on top of it at first because it can be very stressful learning all the information.

What I liked

The best part of my internship was the ability to be able to work around what I really wanted to. The team I was put on was very willing to allow me to explore into new parts of my field that they didn't necessarily get into. It was an awesome experience being able to see how different individuals with different knowledge bases get to work together to reach a common goal. The business model itself is very interesting and makes it a very different type of company to work for. The culture, people, and company vision are great and very rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a specific team that I could have worked on that focused on what I do specifically, i.e. Data Science. From what I can tell this is the direction the company is moving in, so for future interns I'm sure that eventually there will be space for that.

Advice

I would say to just not give up. The hardest part is getting to know the systems, i.e. the database, business rules, etc. It takes time to understand what is going on, and that's okay (just not too long). Once you understand the business you can start making real contributions to improve it.
