Melaleuca

Supply Chain Intern

September - December 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

What I liked about Melaleuca is that they treated me as a part of the team. They gave me projects that would have an impact on my department. I was given the freedom to do the project on my own and could reach out to anyone for help whenever I needed it. I fell like I was able to help my department in many different ways. I enjoyed my entire internship at Melaleuca.

Executive Office PR Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere at Melaleuca. Everyone is very focused on personal growth combined with company growth. I asked my supervisor to really challenge me (as this was my last internship experience before I graduate) and he really took me up on it! Even though it stretched me to my limits, I walked away feeling that I had learned so much and feeling much better prepared for my post-graduation plans.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been there longer!

Advice

If Melaleuca offers you a position, take it. Their internship program is the most put-together, well-thought-out program I've ever been a part of. I was well-supported, appropriately challenged, and enabled to succeed. Wishing I could return again!

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

Working at Melaleuca was an unique experience comparing with other internships. My manager assigned me a lot of different projects, and most of these projects were related to critical business needs. Mealeuca trusts its interns, and gives us the real world experiences to help us to learn and grow. I really enjoyed my experiences working here.

What I wish was different

On-boarding process can be better. I wish that we could learn details about the process, so it would reduce the time we spent to search for answers.

Advice

Always ask questions when you have something that you don't understand. Using your mentor as your guide to help you to learn. My mentor and other coworkers have helped me to learn how to get on board on multiple projects. With their helps. I have come to learn how to become efficient on tasks and projects.

Business Intelligence Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

They gave me high quality projects to work on that will have a lasting impact for my team. Most of my projects will actually be used even after I'm gone, which I feel like doesn't really happen with a lot of intern projects. For example, I built an anomaly reporting dashboard to help identify bottlenecks in their compensation run. I also automated some manual processes that previously had to be done by hand and took about an hour each week. Those projects will continue to be used frequently on a weekly or monthly basis. The team was great, and they were super helpful with explaining how their systems worked so I could make meaningful contributions. It is a good work environment and my team had pretty flexible hours. The internship program itself is really cool because they have weekly intern events where you get together will all 30 interns for special presentations, fun events, or lunch with an executive.

What I wish was different

While the quality of the projects I worked on was great, it was a bit slow at times. This is not a fast-paced environment, so it would have been good to have more work. Also, sometimes the instructions for my projects were a bit vague. Since there are a lot of complicated business rules unique to Melaleuca and no access to documentation, it was challenge to complete some of my projects without a lot of help from the full-time engineers to explain the background context. I think this aspect of the internship mostly depends on your manager. I have heard from some of the other interns that they are really busy and from others that they don't have a lot to do either.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and try to learn from all your team members. Most of them are really friendly and willing to teach you about what they are doing. Also, if you have an idea that goes beyond the scope of the project, make sure to bring that up and ask if you can do it. Managers can't think of everything, and sometimes those ideas turn out to be the most useful parts of your project.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

This company is just the right size to really be able to provide a fantastic internship experience. It's big enough that it gives you experience working in a corporate IT setting, but small enough that you can really own projects and make them your own. The projects I got to be part of were big initiatives that often had other full-time developers on the team. I felt more like an employee than an intern. There are also a ton of great activities and people are very supportive.

What I wish was different

Onboarding could be a little better. It took some trial and error to figure out how things worked.

Advice

Take chances and try to give all your projects a solid try before going for help. You learn a lot about software development if you really try to solve the problems you are faced with yourself before asking other developers what you should do.

Brand Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

My experience at Melaleuca was different than I could have ever expected. Rather than spend my days pulling data and running errands, I was amazed at the level of responsibility and autonomy given to me as an intern. I was treated as a full-time employee and became an essential part of a team, continuously taking on new projects and tackling issues. I truly felt that my efforts lead to the success of my category and I was able to see the implementation of my projects begin to bring real value to Melaleuca as a whole. I had repeated contact with top-management, who each provided valuable feedback and direction. As part of my projects, I participated in multiple cross-functional meetings and briefs, allowing me to get a feel for each sector of the company. In very few companies of this size will you be able to replicate such an impactful and result/action-oriented internship experience. Melaleuca does a fantastic job of treating its interns with respect and value, organizing trainings to facilitate career advice, and even intern outings to local resorts!

What I wish was different

My only regret is that I didn't have more time here. A large part of brand marketing/project management is relationship-based, and it was a little difficult initially to build those necessary bonds. By the time I felt truly comfortable with my team and had ironed out any kinks, it was time to go.

Advice

Take initiative! Though Melaleuca provided fantastic opportunities for responsibility and autonomy, I was able to really carve out a space of value because of initiative. Instead of simply offering data, I did the strategic legwork necessary to provide recommendations to go along. Though sometimes incorrect, my supervisors saw the potential and continued to give more and more responsibility. Also, I never would have taken this position without the valuable advice from others. If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to reach out!

HR Intern

May - August 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

The people were great. Everyone really wants you to have a successful career, even if it isn't with Melaleuca. Great company culture.

What I wish was different

I had a hard time getting projects for the first half of my internship. It was extremely slow, and no one seemed to have anything for me to do. However, the second half of the internship picked up, and I was able to work on some great projects.

Advice

Let your manager know what you are hoping to get out of your internship. Be vocal about your expectations, and they will help you have the kind of experience you are looking for.
