L'Oréal

Marketing Intern

June - August 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

- Housing Stipend of ~4500 (taxed down to ~2000) and $27.5/hr salary which is much higher than other beauty internships -Looks great on resume -Free product if your on a team that is nice (I got a ton but some people got nothing and had to buy with employee discount of ~50%

What I wish was different

-More in-person sessions, much of the programming the recruiters promised was held on line so interns did not really have many chances to meet each other -Not having the orientation day where they spent 8 hrs talking about how diverse the company is and than the next day when I got to the office everyone on my floor above entry level was white and more than not French -Better HR, they are EXTREMELY unresponsive, in the interview process they ghosted me after the verbal offer until I told them I had another offer; I heard from others people were ghosted for 4+ months and only found out they got it in April

Advice

Get everything you can out of the experience, take advantage of the time to build technical skills and do projects to put on resume. TBH the culture is toxic especially to POC and most people don't want to go back and work there but the name on the resume is great so maximize the amount of things you can tell in other interviews!

Advice

Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My experience at L'Oreal was incredible due to the depth of hands-on opportunity that they provide to their summer interns. I was tasked with solving and presenting solutions to real-world business problems my brand was facing. My summer project was to come up with a creative concept and launch plan for a campaign that my brand was launching in 2020 and some of my ideas most likely will be implemented next year. In addition to the the robust summer project, summer interns were given access to networking with a broad range of employees from fellow past interns all the way to Presidents of brands and even the CEO during our summer intern party (which was on the Intrepid battleship!) The people that I met at L'Oreal were some of the best and brightest. I can genuinely say it was the most challenging, but fun and enriching internship experience I have had thus far. Plus, the perks were great (free beauty products and discounts at the company store!)

What I wish was different

I genuinely wouldn't have changed a thing other than I wish it had lasted longer! Going to work each day was enjoyable.

Advice

1) Do your research. Know how the company is structured and operates. With 4 divisions and over 40 beauty brands, there is a lot of opportunity to do many different things at L'Oreal. Think of where you would be the best fit and why. 2) Network, Network, Network. Always work on increasing your circle! Especially at L'Oreal, it is all about hard work and who you know. Even if a connection doesn't seem like it will produce anything immediately, it could lead to a job promotion or offer down the road! Network with a variety of people from different roles, divisions, and brands throughout the company to learn more about the different opportunities at L'Oreal and get a feel for what you think you would like best.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The opportunity to work in the #1 beauty company in the world and gain valuable experience in operational marketing within Maybelline, the #1 beauty brand in the world. I also loved having the opportunity to network with various levels of management within the organization and gain insights into the work culture and the beauty industry.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more support from NYU Career Center and NYU Steinhardt in regards to opportunities in beauty and learning more about the industry and L'Oréal USA prior to my application.

Advice

Never be afraid to network and reach out to past alums who have experienced the internship program themselves. They will most likely have a candid version of their experience to share with you as opposed to the campus recruitment team. Also, remember to stay in touch with all of your connections from any internships because you never know where the next opportunity might come from!

Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Seoul, South Korea

What I liked

I loved my team members, and the overall work culture. I loved my work, which revolved around two major product launches; I got to directly influence their digital and social media marketing strategies.

What I wish was different

I'd say I wish there had been less over-time hours, since sometimes I had to stay late to assemble seeding kits.

Advice

I highly recommend that anyone interested in PR, marketing, or media to apply for this internship. One advice would be to be aware of how digitalization is changing the ways in which every brand should approach sales, marketing, and communication with its stakeholders.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was an amazing experience altogether! I was able to work in one of the most exciting new NYC developments (Hudson Yards), and build a complete marketing campaign from scratch for the internationally known L'Oréal Paris brand. My team was so welcoming and helpful at every step of the way, and the culture of the entire company was very fun and exciting!

What I wish was different

In all honesty, it's very hard to think of anything about my experience that I didn't enjoy. It was definitely very difficult and stressful at times, but that's to be expected with the caliber of work that interns are given. All things considered, the biggest adjustment for me was definitely moving to the NYC area. It's a completely different world over there - but once you adjust after a week or two, you'll start to really appreciate it.

Advice

It sounds cheesy, but just be yourself in the interview process and on the job. L'Oréal is by far the most welcoming company I've ever worked for, and their culture really champions new perspectives and fresh thinking. I was honestly very different from a lot of the people on my team, but that allowed for us all to really collaborate and expand our marketing mindset together. There were so many different backgrounds among even just the marketing interns, that it's clear that they value individuality above all else. Everyone is incredibly friendly and genuine - so while you should prepare a lot for the interviews, don't sweat it too much and don't try to pretend you're someone else.

What I liked

I loved the culture at Loreal and additionally, the idea that I was working on real projects that had an impact on the firm.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a mentorship program set up with past interns in my shoes. It would have been helpful to have a full-time employee who went exactly what I went through to help me with the in's and out's.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed how much responsibility that I was able to receive at an intern level. I felt that my supervisors pushed me to act on my own and treated me like a real full-time employee.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a bit more structure to the internship where you really got to meet other people outside of your division.

Advice

I would really recommend that if you work at L'Oréal that you are pushing yourself to be independent and talking to as many people as possible (especially outside your division).
