English Teaching Assistant

May - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to meet people from all different walks of life. I was able to create my own lesson plans and work one on one with adult immigrants learning English. This English teaching was a very different experience for me as it was very directed towards vocational achievements. We worked with students on their resumes, but also taught them how to approach interviews and what adjectives and verbs would be applicable in these interviews. It was amazing being able to watch the students obtain jobs through using the skills we had developed in the class. I loved my experience here.

What I wish was different

I wish that the organization was a little more organized and that both teachers and the studetns career coaches communicated more with one another. Additionally, I wish that I was able to stick with the same classroom/learning level every day. I was in multiple classrooms which was a great experience for me as I got to see what it was like to teach those who were at different levels in their learning, but it would have been nice to develop those relationships with students more in depth.

Advice

Enter this internship with felxibility and an open mind. Working with adults is much different than working with children. They have very different experiences and abilities. The generational gap was sometimes difficult to overcome but I found that the students had an exuberant amound of passion to learn which really translated in their improvement and achievements.
