IT

May - June 2022 • Hudson, OH

What I liked

Nothing at all. This company is incompetent

What I wish was different

Joann is the worst possible place for an Intern. They’d rather have you constantly socialze with other interns and “seniors” than do the actual work you signed up for. They’ll pull you away from your work to write couple of pages in addition to constant unnecessary slides that has no added value to your internship( The time isnt paid sitting through this either). The people in office barely show up and when they do, they quarrel of who’s going to do the actual job or teach you how to do it. Youll just be sitting there staring at the wall for 8hours then get pulled to forcefully socialize with others. And if you dont adhere to it, they threaten you with termination. Stay away. This place is a major waste of time for interns.

Advice

Do not sign up for an internship here

Retail Salesperson

May 2018 • Angola, IN

What I liked

I am generally well trained and I feel comfortable asking my mangers for help when needed. I also know a decent amount about the kinds of things we sell and aside from my own hobbies I am able to learn about others hobbies.

What I wish was different

A lot of customers treated me very badly and the stores app and coupons frequently had problems making this even worse. I also worked a lot of hours which was good for my wallet but was very stressful, especially because of the pandemic. Our district manager also put a lot of unnecessary stress on our store manager leading to the work environment being unpleasant sometimes. I also wish I was paid more. I could have been paid more flipping burgers.

Advice

Buy comfortable shoes because you are one your feet a lot. Retail has a lot of manual labor involved.

Cashier

May - August 2020 • Manhattan, KS

What I liked

The employees were all very friendly toward each other and toward the customers.

What I wish was different

The shifts are usually pretty long, and the pay is not great. It always seemed that there were either too many employees and some had nothing to work on or there were not enough employees to accomplish what needed done. I also would have liked to receive proper training.

Advice

Be prepared to work long shifts with only one break and for a low wage.

Manager

May 2020 • Brookings, SD

What I liked

I got to learn how to make phone calls and how to be professional on those calls. I also got to learn how much I could handle. I got to close the store, open and run it. I had people that are older then be that I wasn't at first comfortable being in "charge" of them. I got to learn how to deal with mean and angry customers which isn't all that easy. I loved everything about being a manager at Joann's and I'm so glad I still get to be working there as a manager.

What I wish was different

Well I wish the customers could of been nicer but that's nothing that I could change. I really wouldn't have changed anything. I had a great summer in this position and I'm still having a great time/

Advice

Don't be afraid to admit that you bit off more then you can handle.

IT Security Intern

May 2018 • Hudson, OH

What I liked

What I've really enjoyed about this internship is how collaborative it's been. There's been a total of 25 interns from several different departments, and I've gotten to know them all so well by doing a lot of team-building exercises with them and learning about what they're working on from lunch & learns. The company has set up several fun events for us such as kickball, dodgeball, picnics, and more. I've felt really comfortable where I work due to getting along with my coworkers and feel that it's improved my work ethic and motivation.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish was different was the commute - it is a 50 minute drive there. I wish it was closer so I could spend less time driving in the day, and more time working or doing other productive things.

Advice

While working as an intern, never be afraid to ask questions. People at the company hired you for a reason, they see potential in you and want to see you learn and grow. If you don't know something, ask! If they are good workers, they would be happy to help.

June 2018 • El Cerrito, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to work in an environment that was filled with fun crafts, activities, and home decor.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been treated differently; most head managers forgot that we were all struggling together to make sure everyone was happy.

Advice

Always be patient with yourself and others. Working retail jobs are hard because you’re on your feet the entire time, but the experience in customer service is a big talent you can bring with you into so many other jobs in the future.
