I absolutely love working at Joann's since I get to work with people on what they need for their projects and help them leave the store with a smile on their face. I work specifically in the fabric department and I truly enjoy sewing apparel and working with fabric for various projects, so I am then able to give customers helpful opinions on fabrics and projects.

The pay, I feel that the employees work very hard and the pay doesn't necessarily show that.

Advice

To really engage with the customers! You'd be surprised at how many awesome people you can meet through that. Hearing their stories alone was so awesome, I'm excited to go back over Thanksgiving and Christmas break!

I enjoyed being surrounded by creative people and talking to customers and hearing about what projects they were working on. Even just being around all the fabric and looking at the patterns I found inspiring and there was always something visually stimulating for me to look at.

What I wish was different

Only that I could have worked more hours and spent more time with my coworkers.

Advice

Take all the opportunities you can get and speak up if you have an idea, even if it’s just about how you set up some of the merchandise.

All the other team members were very kind and welcoming, and the managers were very accommodating. All welcome to teach and help new employees get the jist of things!

What I wish was different

If there had been one more person to help with closing then I feel it would have gone smoother and we wouldn’t have stayed late most night. There are always a lot of go back and fabric to be put pack at night. M

Advice

Have shoe inserts or shoes with a good sole if you are not used to standing/walking for many hours at a time for consecutive days.

The employees were all very friendly toward each other and toward the customers.

What I wish was different

The shifts are usually pretty long, and the pay is not great. It always seemed that there were either too many employees and some had nothing to work on or there were not enough employees to accomplish what needed done. I also would have liked to receive proper training.

Advice

Be prepared to work long shifts with only one break and for a low wage.

What I liked

I am generally well trained and I feel comfortable asking my mangers for help when needed. I also know a decent amount about the kinds of things we sell and aside from my own hobbies I am able to learn about others hobbies.

What I wish was different

A lot of customers treated me very badly and the stores app and coupons frequently had problems making this even worse. I also worked a lot of hours which was good for my wallet but was very stressful, especially because of the pandemic. Our district manager also put a lot of unnecessary stress on our store manager leading to the work environment being unpleasant sometimes. I also wish I was paid more. I could have been paid more flipping burgers.
