InternFSU

Advertising and Social Media Specialis

August 2018 • Tallahassee, FL

What I liked

I liked that I got to learn how to create brand campaigns and create my own projects start to finish. I was allowed freedom to use my creative background within the brand guidelines of FSU and it was a great learning experience to work doing in-house communications management as well as run the public social media. Even though social media was my specialty, my work was never too routine as I also interviewed students and faculty across campus, wrote news articles, and worked heavily in graphic design. My employer was willing to cater my work to what I was interested in and specialized in, so we worked together to better myself in line with the company mission!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked on a bigger team. I was the only social media intern, and at times I wish I had insight with fellow students. I felt often that I was putting in a lot of work, but our following base was struggling to grow or unresponsive to our posts. However, I had to keep in mind that the whole experience is a learning experience, so even though one campaign may not have done what we hoped, we could grow and do better next time.

Advice

Always be willing to say yes to a task. My employer always appreciated how willing I was to take on projects. Even though often a new assignment was intimidating, it's important to ask for help, but also push yourself to accomplish the goal- you'll be surprised what you can do.
