Medical Laboratory Science

July 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I felt like I got a lot of hands-on experience and job training. Many of the rotations I completed with different Intermountain hospitals, Particularly Primary Children's Hospital, were very job intensive, and I felt like I was working as a trained Medical Laboratory Scientist. I loved feeling busy, involved, and important to the hospital, especially in the chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation departments of the hospital lab.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been paid, seeing as I worked 8.5 hours a day for 5 days a week, for nearly 6 months. I felt like I was a very vital asset to many different areas of the lab, and was running and resulting real patient samples, so I feel I should've been monetarily compensated, at least in some part. There were also other sections of the laboratory (like microbiology), where my trainers didn't really allow me to set up or run patient samples, I simply got to observe for 8 hours a day. Those rotations were significantly more boring and I felt like my time was being wasted.

Advice

This experience is not for the faint of heart. Working full time for 6 months without being paid is very difficult, but it made me feel prepared to enter the work force and have realistic expectations for what a job in a medical laboratory field requires. I gained crucial hands-on experience, and was able to even pick up shifts outside of my internship hours because of my training. I also had to place my motivation on other things besides making money; helping others, gaining skills, and working hard were my primary motives throughout the experience.

What I liked

I love my patients and getting to know their stories.

What I wish was different

More time with my patients. I only get them for 15-20 mins.

Advice

Make the most of it. It can get hard dealing with people who don’t feel well. Comfort them, calm them, and most of all be patient with them and they will think you are the best.
