Delivery Driver

April 2020 • Gainesville, VA

What I liked

Completely on my own schedule, I could work as much or as little as I wanted to and the job was very independent.

What I wish was different

It used a lot of gas, and although the distance was calculated in compensation, it was still an expense that other jobs do not have.

Advice

The flexibility of this job was absolutely the right choice for me this summer. I was not ready to commit to a schedule but still needed a source of income, and this was the perfect solution. However, this type of job will only be effective if you have the motivation and self-determination to work consistently.

Instacart Shopper

June 2020 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

It was very rewarding helping those who could not get their own groceries during covid. There were many older people and people at risk who could not go to the store. Being able to do shop and deliver for them was amazing.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn’t so competitive trying to get orders now. There were a lot more towards the beginning of covid.

Advice

Don’t think about the work itself, but rather understand how important it is to help others during this time.

Instacart Shopper

March 2020 • Niceville, FL

What I liked

I liked how I had control over how much I worked and how much I got paid. I could work as much as I wanted (one week I made $600, another week I made $25), and I could take time off if I felt like I needed to.

What I wish was different

The format changed a few times over the summer, and sometimes there were days when hardly any batches came up. A tangible thing Instacart can change is their customer support. They take a long time to fix the issue depending on the time of day, and sometimes the delay makes the customer have to wait. Also, they should be able to switch store locations if the shopper feels that a certain store is more convenient to the customer.

Advice

Only take the batches that are worth it, and try to work as much as you can.

What I liked

Flexible hours, good pay, fun work environment.

What I wish was different

More consistent batches and it was hard to plan my day.

Advice

You have to be very disciplined in order to make money successfully. Set goals for yourself on how much money you want to make each week/month.

Instacart shopper

April - September 2020 • Coventry, RI

What I liked

I was able to accept jobs whenever I wanted which allowed me to make money while still in school last semester. I was also able to make plans during summer whenever I wanted (even though there was not much to do because of COVID-19).

What I wish was different

What I did not like was that I could not guarantee that I would be making money whenever I wanted because I had to rely on customers places orders. Every morning I would wake up and hope to take an order worth about $40 and try to complete it in 2 hours ($20 per hour minus gas). However, there were not always big orders like this and the orders available were not always worth it.

Advice

I would not rely on this as your only source of income if you have monthly payments or anything like that because making money each week is not guaranteed. If you are looking for a flexible job to have extra spending cash, this job is great.

What I wish was different

Advice

Learn your stores well, and be sure to communicate any changes to the customer. Also, do not take low-paying batches, and try to avoid double and triple orders! Higher paying batches might not seem as frequent, but waiting for higher paying batches will ultimately make you more money.
