I really enjoyed working with people who cared about me as a person. During my time at ITD, my managers really took the time to get to know me personally, and I could tell that they genuinely cared about my success both as a student and as an intern at ITD. Furthermore, the hours were super flexible, and I never felt guilty for having to miss meetings / work activities because of school or life-events.
What I wish was different
During my time at ITD, there was a lot of employee turnover and organizational changes. Though this allowed me to meet some awesome new people, it did make my onboarding experience a little chaotic because I did not receive a lot of training. However, I wouldn't let this dissuade you from applying to work at ITD because my managers were made aware of this and have been working to develop more onboarding materials for future interns.
Advice
Use the resources that are available to you! Your managers want you to succeed and are willing to help you learn and grow in any areas you would like. The folks at ITD understand the value of education and are willing to pay you to grow your knowledge. For instance, during my time as an intern with ITD, I was able to get certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Civil Engineering Intern
August - October 2018 • Shoshone, ID
What I liked
I was involved in meetings with consultants, making calculations for projects and official documents needed for the planning and construction of roadways and bridges.
What I wish was different
I wish it had been advertised better. I was in charge of doing a lot of paperwork and even more technical reading. When I heard about the job, I thought I would be making decisions that would actually effect the construction processes and materials used. This turned out not to be the case.
Advice
Be prepared to spend a lot of time sitting down and reading through reports and looking for relevant information. The pace you move at is not as important as getting things done right. In college we have due dates for projects and homework. At ITD (Idaho Transportation Department) the pace doesn't matter so much. Don't worry if something takes you a few days to get done or even a whole week. Just keep going.

IT Infrastructure Intern
June 2019 • Boise, ID
What I liked
I enjoy the hands-on experience working with the organization's IT infrastructure. The experience definitely exposed me to the daily tasks of an IT Infrastructure Engineer by giving me the opportunity to physically set up servers in the data center, configuring them, and deploying them to users.
What I wish was different
Honestly, I wish there was more projects and tasks to do to consume the amount of available time I had to work in the summer. I enjoyed working on many of the projects and tasks so much that I usually ran out of things to do.
Advice
Actively seek out work from other teams. It's not only a rewarding experience to help others, but it's also an amazing opportunity to learn and develop professional networks.

What I liked
ITD has taught me a lot about working in the professional field. I really enjoy how my supervisor's have been very supportive of my ideas and want me to take as many opportunities as possible. I recently have started up a team of interns. Before ITD had no way for interns to meet and get to know one another and what they did in their department. I have worked very hard to create a team of interns in order to optimize our opportunities while being an intern at ITD. I have enjoyed helping many departments standardizing their processes throughout ITD. I was able to learn how to do this by creating a standardized guide for intern processes, and now it has been implemented and used as an example throughout the company.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had the opportunity to meet other interns around me at the very beginning. It was hard to feel comfortable at first because all of the people around me are much older. However, it made me get out of my comfort zone, and learn how to handle situations with people that are a lot different than me in the workplace.
Advice
I would definitely say to take risks and ask a lot of questions! In the beginning if I didn't understand something I would just try to figure it out myself, but now I realize that this just wastes time and it is okay to ask questions! Lots of them!
