Executive Service Corps of Southern California

Development & Communications Intern

June - August 2023 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility to explore my own passions and career aspirations within my role. I appreciated the team's encouragement and support as I assisted on major projects during the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have been in-person more with the team. But with the changing job landscape due to COVID, having the internship be mostly remote was understandable. I wish I could have pursued more personal projects during the internship as well.

Advice

I would suggest that the student think about any interests they wish to explore and don't be afraid to ask about ways in which you can explore them during the internship!

Fund Development & Communications Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the collaborative approach ESC takes with their work. While remote, I participated in team meetings, check ins with my supervisors, and planning meetings with staff from various departments. By working on projects across various ESC departments, I was able to get to know staff outside my own department and provide my input.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be openminded and say yes to opportunities! The ESC team is very welcoming and I was offered opportunities to get more involved in teams outside my assigned projects/tasks. Because I was willing to participate and contribute, I was able to integrate myself into the team culture better. In the remote environment there are fewer opportunities socialize or put yourself out there, so taking advantage of opportunities to work on other projects or attend events/meetings is beneficial.

Development and Communications Intern

June - July 2020 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked that the organization gave me the opportunity to experience meetings and interviews that would have traditionally fallen outside of my assigned department. There was much collaboration amongst all departments of ESC, and I greatly benefitted from seeing how all the different parts combined to make the whole work.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have been longer so I could have seen some of my projects in their final stages. Although my supervisors made sure to send me the final products, it would have been nice to be more hands on as it was coming together. I don't think this would be an issue for an in-person experience, however.

Advice

I would say don't be afraid of asking to speak with other staff of the organization if their work or a specific project interests you. During my time with ESC, I worked in Development and Communications, but I learned so much from my time with staff in other areas.
