Double H Ranch

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Lake George, NY

What I liked

If you have the mindset of/ or like the idea of giving yourself to others, this is the place for you. It offers the ability to both give joy to those who need it and the chance to improve yourself.

What I wish was different

Due to the age range of the staff and the immensity of them, there is a chance for workplace drama.

Advice

No one’s perfect. This is a job where you are always learning. Do not be afraid of screwing up. As long as you’re honest and well intentioned, you will be accepted.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Lake Luzerne, NY

What I liked

How amazing the staff and kids were all summer, how accepting everyone was and understanding that we all come from different places and have different problems, but we all deserve to be treated with kindness and be accepted for who we are!

What I wish was different

My only “complaint” would be that I didn’t get my spot on the staff until about 2-3 weeks before camp started, but that was only because they had a spot open up that they needed filled!

Advice

Go into it with an open mind, open arms, and an open heart! You’re gonna meet some kiddos that will change your life, but only if you let them.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Lake Luzerne, NY

What I liked

Double H is a camp for children with chronic and serious illnesses. Working there was a truly life-changing experience. Everyday mattered, and everyday, though it could often be challenging and tiring, was an absolute joy. Working as a team, communicating, supporting one another, and being part of a community were a huge part of the job as well.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

I would say that it's important to learn from those around you who have more experience. There can be a lot of butting heads when it comes to the best way to care for a child and to foster a sense of community among a group of children, and it's to your benefit to take a step back and listen to your superiors. It's very humbling.
