Private tutor
April - August 2019 • Tokyo, Tokyo Prefecture
What I liked
As a private tutor, I was able to have a flexible schedule and could choose who and where I would teach. Doing one-on-one work allowed me to have more profound conversations with my clients and helped me build personal relationships.
What I wish was different
If I had an employer, I might have had more jobs -- but this was a downside I was willing to accept, as I enjoyed being my own employer and thus having more control over my time and labor.
Advice
I found most of my clients through personal experiences, such as meeting people at social events. While talking to them about what I do, I found that a lot more people were interested in having private English and software lessons than I expected at first. Always put yourself out there and network -- you may find work opportunities in places you might least expect.

May - August 2019 • Sioux Falls, SD
What I liked
I loved being able to spend my time with kids varying out activities day to day! Being in college means that I only ever see people my age, and being someone who loved kids, it was so refreshing to care for kids all summer.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had a larger activity budget so that I could have taken them to the zoo, water parks, etc.
Advice
If you don't have patience or don't want to care for other people, don't do this job!

Nanny and Soccer Coach
March 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI
What I liked
I loved that I got to work with kids all summer. I also got to work with my favorite sport, soccer, and helped kids understand it more and be able to share my knowledge with them. As a nanny I got to relax and enjoy my summer with two great little girls.
What I wish was different
I don’t really wish anything would have been different. My schedule was extremely flexible, I did things that I loved. I got to enjoy my summer, while working and making money.
Advice
One piece that of advice would be to enjoy the time that you have. You’re going to be working for the rest of your life. Make sure you find something that you absolutely love that’s going to give you the ability to take time off and enjoy the little things in life.

June 2019 • Naperville, IL
What I liked
Pay was really good, I could add hours or request days off, and it was a fun job to have overall!
What I wish was different
Not too much overall - maybe more scheduling/planning.
Advice
Know that you have to have an interest in kids to enjoy your job everyday. It depends what ages you're nannying for, but you learn a lot about taking charge and leadership because you're ultimately the caregiver at the time.
