Dawn Steele

Prenatal and Labor assistant

July 2019 • Blaine, MN

What I liked

I am able to assist a military spouse through her first pregnancy and soon delivery during the deployment of her husband. I will then be able to assist her with navigating motherhood and how to manage childcare, nursing, managing her new home, and returning to work until her husband returns.

What I wish was different

The whole experience was amazing. The only thing that I could have wished was that this amazing woman would not have had to be in this position at all.

Advice

To reach out to people. If you are looking for volunteer hours or just experience in different settings, there is likely people out there in need of some additional hands that would be willing to train you to help, or that need help in an area that you may already excel at.

Babysitting

June - August 2019 • Glen Cove, NY

What I liked

I loved being able to make the boy’s summer one they wouldn’t forget. We bonded and they became attached to me by the end of the summer. Their mother adored our relationship and asked to hire me every summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had met the family sooner and had the opportunity to watch the boys year round.

Advice

The impression you make on a family you care for matters more to them than to yourself. It can make or break their trust, spirit, and willingness to open up.

What I liked

Flexible schedule when personal needs came up.

What I wish was different

Advice

Whatever you do with the kids the first week will set a precedent for the whole summer. Remember, you are a role model to them and should take an interest in their lives. Don’t just sit on the couch on your phone and let them do the same all the time.
