Internship

January - March 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I liked everything about this place. I felt very welcome there and I always felt free to work and contribute with new ideas. Everyone is very receptive, polite and open-minded. The organization has a commendable mission, and I felt happy every day that I was working at Crossroads, sharing knowledge and serving the population. I had the opportunity to put into practice what I learned in Health Studies classes. I also learned a lot about how it is always possible to contribute to improving people's quality of life in some way. Treating with dignity, informing, being available, being kind, are some values that are part of the routine of those who work at Crossroads. This was an incredible experience in my life. I certainly recommend Crossroads Community Service as a place to intern, volunteer and/or work.

What I wish was different

I don't think something should be different

Advice

If you want to contribute effectively to the community, putting into practice what you have learned in the Health Studies course or similar, Crossroads is an ideal place. Grab this opportunity!

Client Intake Specialist

What I liked

What I loved about my internship at Crossroads Community Services is that the staff made it feel like home. My mentor Jesse Kramer was the best mentor I could have ever asked for. He was super flexible, and a great leader. He was very open to ideas and gave me things to work on. I was able to learn various things at this internship. I really enjoyed being able to help out all the families that came to the pantry.

What I wish was different

Advice

A piece of advice I would give future interns and volunteers is to be understanding to everybody's situations that come into the food pantry. Make sure that you have patience, and put your listening ears on when you come to the food pantry.

Student Intern

January 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

There are many things I enjoy about interning/volunteering at CCS Food Pantry. The training process is fast and easy. The overall work environment is positive and easy going; while remaining focused on the organizations mission. Every day is different and this opportunity allowed me to work in many different areas, providing me with a better understanding of how this nonprofit thrives and how to better assist their clients. The volunteers and workforce team is composed of selfless and extremely talented individuals who take pride in all things accomplished throughout the day. Lastly, I really liked that student interns from other local universities intern at this location, this provided a great opportunity to network and collaborate with interns from other local universities.

What I wish was different

I can’t say I wish anything would have been different.

Advice

This is a great opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic about public/community health or just health sciences in general and individuals who are innovative, compassionate, and able to multitask will thrive in this work environment.

What I liked

The training received from employees was extremely helpful and insightful. Employees and volunteers alike have great work ethic. There is multiple positions to work and be trained on. The supervisors and coordinators here are admirable and show great leaderships skills. The scheduling and hours are very flexible. Overall, I appreciated the experience to help others while working with a group of people who share similar values.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have offered a paid internship position. Other than that, everything was fine.

Advice

It is beneficial to be able to speak Spanish. However, it is not a necessity and it is easy to learn Spanish here and there while working. There is help from peers as well.
