What I liked

I loved the other interns I worked with and my boss and the other employees. Everyone was so happy to have us and willing to work with us.

What I wish was different

I wish some things about the job were more organized, but I really did enjoy having a schedule that changed around a lot.

What I liked

I worked for the 4H Urban Outreach program, which runs after-school and summer programs for under-served children in Tompkins County. I assisted with the coordination and administration of the program, as well as working with the kids and making lesson plans for the after school programs. Having worked in Syracuse City Schools it was great to have the opportunity to work for an after-school program and for a different population of kids. I also enjoyed the chance to be on the administrative and planning side of the program.

What I wish was different

I wished I had had more time to work in this program! It was interesting to work with a diverse community and get to know the office staff.

Advice

Try something new! I hadn't spent much time in Ithaca, and hadn't heard of the 4H Urban Outreach Program. But it ended up being one of my favorite volunteer experiences, and I'm so glad I did it.

What I liked

The level of autonomy I had with projects, the fact that what I was doing kept me in the area (allowing me to take a class and continue some research)

What I wish was different

For what it was I liked it, I think next summer I'll want something a little more structured and "bigger deal" than the local cooperative extension though.
