Copeland

Supplier Quality Engineering Co-op

May - August 2024 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

I really liked Copeland's co-op program. They do a good job at giving the co-ops a lot of experiences and opportunities by working on projects, going through various trainings and going on tours of their facilities and other locations. I worked in Supplier Quality and had the opportunity to be responsible for the label PPAPs along with some other projects. I helped with data analysis, GR&Rs, supplier visits, and much more.

What I wish was different

I personally don't think that supplier quality is the best fit for me as I move forward with my career, so I do wish that I could have possibly had some more experience with some hands-on work, which is what I prefer. However, this was a great learning opportunity and I am glad that I did it. I think another thing is that I only did one term at Copeland and it was just for a summer. I think that being able to stay at one place for longer can give you a better opportunity to work with bigger projects and see them all the way through. It is hard to get many long-term projects done in one summer.

Advice

The advise that I would give is to take advantage of all of the great opportunities that are offered. The point of being a co-op is to learn as much as possible and the best way to do that is to actively participate. Do your best with the projects and tasks you are assigned. Always ask questions if you don't understand something, but also make an effort to try things on your own to learn.

Advanced Manufacturing Co-op

May - August 2024 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

During my co-op, I gained extensive knowledge in advanced manufacturing and process improvement. I developed a solid understanding of the manufacturing lifecycle and the intricacies of plant operations. Additionally, I improved my teamwork and communication skills by working closely with colleagues from various departments. This experience also provided me with a broader perspective in the HVAC industry and the strategic planning required for the company's future state. Overall, I acquired practical skills and insights that will be beneficial for my career.

What I wish was different

There isn't a lot that I would change. The company has a few minor issues, but these are understandable as they transition to becoming a standalone company.

Advice

Ask questions and try to gain as much experience as possible. This company offers numerous opportunities to explore and learn new things, so take full advantage of them.

Thermal Systems Innovation Engineering Co-op

January - May 2024 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

Overall, I really liked the experience of getting to learn new things with great people. The atmosphere was supportive of creativity and encouraged working outside of the box. During my time here, I was able to contribute to many projects and was given the opportunity to dive deep into them and truly understand and appreciate the work I was doing. I also really liked the emphasis the work had on working towards a more efficient and environmentally conscience environment.

What I wish was different

Overall, the experience was very positive. If I were to improve my experience I would reach out to more people to get involved with other roles in the company. Some of the business sides of the organization were interesting to me so I will take those steps to learn more about that in the future.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would give is to just know your role. Understanding that you are there to contribute to the company helps to put things into perspective. Also, being communicative with others in the organization is also very helpful in getting to know people. It also provides an opportunity to explore what jobs are interesting to you and to discover where you can be most helpful.

Lab Engineering Co-op

January - May 2024 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

What I enjoyed at Copeland was that they entrusted me with a project I was initially unfamiliar with, such as migrating data analytic visual systems like Power BI. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to collaborate with their Pune team located in India, which taught me valuable skills in navigating time differences and overcoming slight language barriers. Moreover, I relished the chance to explore their labs, witnessing firsthand their building facilities and the diverse testing processes they employ. Additionally, I appreciated the company's approach of granting co-ops the freedom to make mistakes without being micromanaged.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have spent more time working in the labs, conducting tests, and engaging in building activities, but I understand that this is a matter of personal preference. Additionally, I wish the job description had provided more clarity regarding the extent of data management and visual programming involved in the experience. However, aside from these points, I wouldn't alter my overall experience. The company culture and atmosphere are exceptionally nurturing and free from toxicity. I would highly recommend both this company and my manager to other co-ops seeking enriching opportunities.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is: don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are beneficial; sometimes, you have to mess up or break a program to better learn it. I've personally made many mistakes along the way, and each one has contributed to my growth. As long as you learn from your mistakes and don't dwell on them or repeat harmful patterns, the company will support you in getting back on track. They understand that learning often involves trial and error, and they're invested in your development.

NPD Engineer

January 2024 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

Everyone here wants to see you succeed, the environment makes you want to come into work the next day rather than having to. They make the onboarding process very simple for Co-ops, as well as having good benefits for all of us. They also have various opportunities to shadow other positions or visit other plant locations. The whole process and time I have spent here I enjoyed a lot. My responsibilities are from just data analysis and data entry to pulling parts and writing Engineering Lab Tests to going and doing my own tests for validations for different items. I also have multiple projects going on at once like validating the use of an item on another line of products.

What I wish was different

There wasn't a lot that I would wish to be different. They make everything very intuitive and simple, that being said, getting your offer extended wasn't a smooth process. I think that they could warn you before they try and give your position to someone else and not try and kick you out without seeing if you plan to stay or not. That is the only thing I would change.

Advice

A piece of advice that I would give someone is to come everyday on time, and ready to try your best. That seems really simple and intuitive, but it makes a big difference. If you do that everyday it shows them that they can count on you and builds trust, and that goes a long way. Don't waste your time there because you are there to learn and there is always more to learn.
