Fast Food Worker

September 2022 - April 2023 • Ypsilanti, MI

What I liked

Overall, I enjoyed the management there. Even though there tends to be a shift from year to year the managers/supervisors tend to always treat us with respect.

What I wish was different

A major change I wish was there was the pay rate. Given the amount of work that needs to be completed daily, it would be best to increase the pay rate just like the other competitors like Mcdonald's to at least $15/hour.

Advice

Try to keep a positive mindset while working to avoid any unnecessary distractions while working there.

Editorial Intern

May - August 2021 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I loved working with such an experienced staff and learning something new every day about the editorial world. The company invests so much in their interns. I had the opportunity to take a Public Speaking seminar as well as a Sales seminar, both of which greatly increased my knowledge of these thing and my appeal as an applicant to potential employers.

What I wish was different

Due to Covid it was a remote internship, I so badly wish I could have been in the office with my coworkers.

Advice

Be open to everything! I went in thinking I would strictly be writing and reviewing things due to my major, but I was given the freedom and trust to edit digital programs, insert and key pictures, learn about sales, find my public speaking voice, and so much more. Trust the learning process!

Diet Clerk

May 2019 • North Wales, PA

What I liked

What I like about my job is that I can experience the foodservice industry in a way that involves me as a server and also as a diet clerk, so that I learn from the bottom up about the industry. I am able to interact with patients, shadow others to see what kind of positions are available and also work closely with dietitians throughout the day. I love to learn more about what is involved in a day as a dietitian and I am able to ask as many questions as I would like because I am interacting with not only the dietitians but also the cooks, servers and supervisors. I am in a Management class currently and it is much easier to understand the concepts of management when I am also involved in the process at work and see first-hand how the different roles of managing play out on a daily basis.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to do a bit more with the patients and learn about their diets from the moment they are admitted, so that I can see the process of choosing a restricted diet, instead of just receiving the diet orders as they come through in an email. I do a lot of menu checking and overseeing diet orders as they come through email, but I would love to be able to know why someone has a "1500 mL fluid restriction," or "low sodium diet," for example.

Advice

I would advise anyone working as a diet clerk to be open to learning about the different positions in a foodservice industry. It is easy to come into work and just focus on what needs to be done on your end, but you can learn a lot about the company and the management process by paying attention to what others are doing. This is also beneficial because sometimes things do not run smoothly in the kitchen or on the floors, and the more knowledge you have about the positions of the industry, the more you can step in and help out when needed.
