What I liked

I got to meet so many new people and spend more time on Columbia's beautiful campus.

Orientation Leader

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved my team of dedicated individuals. We all had different fields of study and were in different years, yet we all got along really well and communicated effectively. Meeting all the new students and their parents was also a lot of fun and was interesting everyday.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked with my team for longer! I also wanted to hear "Find your creative crew" but it wasn't ever translated to the new students.

Advice

Do not be afraid to try it. Being an student leader can be and is intimidating but was ultimately one of the best experiences of my time at Columbia so far.

Front Desk Receptionist

September 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoy the chance to be more involved on campus, and that my on campus job is catered to my schedule so that school is able to come first, but I am still able to work 20 hours a week.

What I wish was different

I wish there was an opportunity to work more than 20 hours a week.

Advice

Make sure that you are prepared to put in the time for a part time on campus job. School should always be a priority, especially when you're paying so much money to attend Columbia, so it is incredibly important that you're able to balance your social life, work and school in a way that is still healthy and beneficial to you.

Peer Tutor

September 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The general aura of the Academic Center for Tutoring is honestly the most welcoming of any place I've ever worked. My colleagues and higher-ups are all smart, witty, and kind. Most students who book sessions tell me that overall they feel comfortable here, which is doubly nice due to the inherent academic nature of the tutoring center. Additionally, there are ample opportunities for creativity, and the music room has a full size digital upright piano! Your work schedule is designed to work around your class schedule, and time off is never difficult to request or receive.

What I wish was different

I hadn't heard of the ACT until I saw the job opportunity on Handshake, and I wish circumstances allowed me to know about it when I needed tutoring myself. Also, there's a cap of having 15 scheduled hours per week.

Advice

Don't forget to relax! If you get this job, it's because you're good at what you do. Tutors are tutors because they're good at helping people.
