Commodities sales and trading Summer analyst

June - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

The hours compare favorably to investment banking, including free weekends. The people want to help you learn and will stop what they are doing even when the market is open to explain something to you.

What I wish was different

I wish cox had focuses on courses designed for coding and high level excel available within the business school to undergrads.

Advice

Preliminary coding experience will impress but is not required.

Analyst (Investment Banking)

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

First is the incredible culture here. There is no such thing as an uptight banking atmosphere here, as everyone is genuine, passionate about their work, very supportive of each other, and always happy to teach and mentor interns. Everybody works hard but would relax and chill when time allows. Second is the large deal exposure. In 10 weeks of work, I was staffed on several live buy-side as well as sell-side deals and given real, challenging work for large institutional clients. Analysts can go to meetings with clients with senior bankers and are given room to contribute and discuss ideas with senior bankers on the deal. Fire drills are common due to the volume of deals in the pipeline, and as a result, the deal exposure is excellent and would give very good learning experience to junior bankers. Last but not least, the senior bankers here genuinely care a lot about their juniors, are very hands-on when it comes to technical aspects of the deliverables, and would spend time chatting and teaching junior bankers when they are free.

What I wish was different

Working here for longer! I love working with them.

Advice

Watch out and look as soon as possible for good housing that is less than 10 minutes of commute in the area, because the hours could be brutal if staffed on more than 3 (very) live deals. Housing in SF is expensive, especially at the heart of financial district so earlier found the better.

Treasury Intern

June - August 2018 • Getzville, NY

What I liked

I liked having a regular schedule and no homework. The professional work environment was really nice and something to look forward to.

What I wish was different

It seemed like they weren't totally ready for us. A few things were unorganized and the managers and HR could have communicated better.

Advice

The full-time employees and the work they give you is more important than the intern-only projects.
