Center for Racial Equity in Education (CREED)

Marketing & Communications Intern

September 2023 • Chapel Hill, NC

What I liked

CREED's mission and values align closely with my own, so it was amazing getting to work with people who share my passion for racial justice and equity. Aside from this, the team has been incredibly welcoming and positive, and did a wonderful job making me feel valued and heard. I appreciate that they took my suggestions and let me enact my own ideas as far as projects go.

What I wish was different

Nothing comes to mind - I had a great experience!

Advice

Be sure to communicate efficiently! In my experience, they are pretty flexible with deadlines for projects, but if you don't think you can meet them or you have other tasks to handle, just let them know.

Policy and Advocacy Intern

September 2023 - December 2024 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

CREED provided a supportive environment that fostered growth and challenged me in news ways. Even though it was a remote internship I felt connected to the warm team members who definitely value community making it a great work space. I liked how integrated the interns were with the entire team rather than solely just working with other interns. This taught me a lot about not just the department I was working in but others as well. I am so grateful I got to work with CREED and highly recommend it to other students!

What I wish was different

Nothing comes to mind, I look back on the experience very fondly!

Advice

Ask questions! I learned so much from the team members here because of it who shared their own personal experiences with me and their unique perspectives on a variety of educational policy topics.

Policy and Advocacy Intern

January 2024 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I could not be more grateful to be working with the CREED team! This organization has created a culture that blends highly motivated and committed work with an equity mindset that meets the needs of college students. In addition, every member of the organization, from the executive director to HR to full-time members of the Policy Team, has made efforts to reach out to me for 1-on-1 chats. I feel truly valued and have gained so many mentors in just a few months here. On top of all that, the team immediately invited me to be courageous and pursue research on various policy topics that matter to me.

What I wish was different

Nothing sticks out in my mind as lacking with this internship.

Advice

I would advise any future interns to reach out to as many members of the CREED team as possible so that you can hear their stories! If you take advantage of the wisdom and passion embodied in this organization, you will leave this internship with an undeniable hunger to advocate for racial equity in education.

Programming Intern

June - September 2023 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed every aspect of this internship. It was a great learning opportunity and led me to understand the programming functions of education-based non-profit organizations. This experience allowed me to center on my professional interests and provided me with the resources to expand my knowledge. Furthermore, the organization's culture was one of a kind-- I truly felt supported by everyone. James was very intentional in educating interns about what education equity entailed. He served as a mentor and provided advice. Kamille, my supervisor, was extremely supportive, kind, and uplifting. She allowed me to express my creativity and was always there to guide me and answer any questions. Overall, interning at CREED was an amazing opportunity and I would highly encourage those interested in education equity to apply.

What I wish was different

I would have appreciated completing the internship in the area. Since this was a remote position I could not attend some of the in-person events hosted by CREED. Nonetheless, the experience was extremely fulfilling.

Advice

Do not be afraid to explore your different creative abilities. The team, specifically Kamille, was very supportive and available to provide advice and guidance. Just make sure to communicate.
