Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2023 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Got to work on a project that actually had an impact at the company which was really cool. I also go to work pretty independently. The program also put on a lot of cool events.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more variety in the work that could be done during the internship. I also think that some of the speakers were unnecessary.

Advice

Make sure to communicate with your team and check in with your manager regularly to double check your expectations and make sure your performance is up to standards.

Technology Intern

June - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to put some of the concepts I learned about in the classroom into a real setting while also getting paid! Not only that but Capital One puts on quite a few events to make interns feel valued, and the coding experience really made me feel like I could do anything because of the way they broke the project down and then implemented it. So, I got to see the project be created from basically nothing, and it wasn't terribly simple either.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd set goals earlier in the internship, and put more effort into self-development so that I could've gained more skills and certifications.

Advice

Create goals and orient yourself early. There's a good amount of time towards the beginning where your team won't be doing much-don't just waste it, you have access to valuable training resources you can use to advance your skills!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more clarity and definition on my role before starting the job, as I thought it would be more strategy but it ended up being a lot more data-heavy.

First-Year Intern

June - August 2021 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Capital One has a great culture and I felt this even in a virtual environment. I really loved that this internship focused more on learning and building skills necessary to succeed at the company, and then in the final four weeks we worked on a project in our given team. The people were amazing and helpful, and the mentors and support system I received really gave me the confidence to do well in my internship. We were given much independence in how we used our time and I really loved that.

What I wish was different

I wish we were given more time to work on the project, possibly splitting the learning and working component as 5 weeks each, or incorporating the work from day one as we learn. Regardless, this is something minor in the grand scope of things.

Advice

Really be your true self, because this company allows you to be your true self. Take advantage of the networking opportunities because you never know where they could lead to. Everyone is willing to help, but also don't be extremely reliant on others.

Technology Internship Program

June - August 2021 • McLean, VA

What I liked

My project had meaning, and I understood what role it played in the bigger picture. Work-life balance was great, and Capital One really cares about its employees.

What I wish was different

I wish I were given more background for my project before we jumped straight into working on stories, but my coworkers were helpful when discussing things I didn't know.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try something new, especially if the only thing holding you back is fear of the unknown. Employers love it when students show ambition. Play to win, don't play to not lose.
