Boy Scouts of America Jayhawk Area Council

Merit Badge Instructor

May 2018 - July 2022 • Oskaloosa, KS

What I liked

Camp Jayhawk which is the scout side of the camp is one of the best summer experiences you'll have in your life! The staff/coworkers you'll meet will be family to you and all the staff just want what's best for the camp and the kids. The quality of season staff and volunteer cannot be praised enough! The facility is on the older side but it still is a large camp with 300 acres of land with a fairly large lake for boating and swimming. Whatever your skills the camp will work with to find a position best suited to you. Overall I worked there four years and I can truly say it changed my life for the better! If your looking for a job to gain experience in a lot of areas and explore different options with so many training available like lifeguarding, Leave no trace/outdoor ethics, medical/cpr, leadership, and so many more this is the place for you.

What I wish was different

The camp however is on the older side and the Council doesn't give you a lot of funding for your classes or pay. This is nothing out of malice or greed by any means, the council just doesn't get the attendance it once had and thus is a little lacking in the funding department now.

Advice

Have fun, the scouts has a bad reputation to some people but I can personally tell you the scouting program really changes lives, so enjoy yourself because the kids reflect your attitude, so when your happy they're happy.
